Great price for this manual
By Todd Ferguson
Great price for this manual. I have been looking for this book for some time and found it here. It's hard to write a repair manual one-size-fits-all cause everyone is a mechanic- right? I enjoy looking through repair manuals and seeing how the Rav4 baby is put together & how to take it apart. I got this manual to help me better understand what is needed when the service mechanic makes recommendations and if I can do the job myself. BTW- if you own one of these Rav4s make sure you check the water pump for pink leaks, key stuck in the ignition switch, occasional TPMS idiot light, & PS (electric power steering) idiot light- turn off car & restart clears it.

The shade tree mechanic's essential book.
By Mr. Bill
I've bought many Haynes or Chilton's repair manuals over the years and have always found them to be a really good value. This is no exception. It is not as good as the factory service manual, but it also does not cost $600! It is practical, helpful and I would recommend it to anyone.

The Situation Is Hopeless But Not Serious (The Pursuit of Unhappiness), by Paul Watzlawick

Calling upon metaphors, vignettes, jokes, innuendos, and certain other "right-hemispheric" language games, Paul Watzlawick shows how we can (and do) make everyday life miserable.

Do you see the past through a rosy filter that makes it seem like Paradise Lost? Are you convinced that traffic lights always turn red for you? Do you have to win (so as not to lose)? After extricating yourself from a bad relationship, do you find another partner just like the previous one? If so, congratulations! You have the makings of an unhappiness expert. With the techniques in this book, you can raise yourself to the genius level. A word of warning, however. Along the way you may begin to ask yourself, "How did I manage to turn myself into my own worst enemy?" Fortunately, this tongue-in-cheek (but serious) volume takes a look at that question too.

Special attention is given to such topics as "Four Games with the Past," "Self-fulfilling Prophecies," and "Why Would Anybody Love Me?" Those who believe that the search for happiness will eventually lead to happiness will find much to ponder in the section "Beware of Arriving."

All readers will be both amused and startled to find themselves in these pages, but there is a special delight and enlightenment for therapists and counselors. Although the author does not officially admit it, the book is one complex "symptom prescription," a therapeutic double bind as described and practiced by him and his colleagues.

A really amusing and tale-telling reading
By Bartolomucci Fabrizio
The author extracts from his extensive practice and writing in the field of communication theory an amusing list of "technics" people use to make their own lives miserable. They span from the avoidance of things that could solve one's own problems to the dual tendency to insist focusing on what cannot be reached; to projecting one's prejudices on others like when one wants to ask something fearing it will not be given and thus putting in act behaviours that forster just that reaction.

All in all the feeling that one gets from the book is that we do not need terrorism, wars, discriminations, torture, presidents of the United States or Osamas... all that is needed to make ourselves unhappy is already inside ourselves - thus, and here comes the positive message, it is there that it may, and must, be cured.

Hilarious
By A Customer
Brilliant. When I wasn't laughing out loud, I was pierced by his trenchant obervations. Shows us how we choose unhappiness without even thinking about it. He is no Pangloss, the world is a tough place, but Watzlawick shows us how we make it worse than it has to be for ourselves. Highly, highly recommended for anyone with a sense of humor who wants to know more about him/herself.

LAUGHING YOURSELF OUT OF UNHAPPINESS
By Luciano Lupini
A review by the marqueeofburano: A wonderful, witty, expos of our endeavors to live a more miserable life by Watzlawick, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Stanford University. The treatment of the subject will surely make you laugh at yourself and thus, perhaps, contribute to make you a better person.
W. deals with the fundamental, painful, necessity of the human being to be unhappy (in order to be quiet). And in fact, he contends that the best chapters of universal literature dwell with disaster, tragedy, guilt, madness, etc.
Dante's Inferno-W. writes- is very superior to his Paradise; same case as Milton's Paradise Lost compared with his Paradise Regained; Faust I's greatness is proportionally inverse to the tediousness of Faust II. So the author embarks hilariously in a methodic introduction to the best and more verifiable mechanisms to achieve unhappiness. Samples:
Always be truthful to yourself. A principle, from Polonius in Hamlet,of the outmost necessity for us ( its application is what gets the guy killed by Hamlet like a rat). So then, we must resist any temptation to yield to any other criteria or opinion, apart from ours. Never compromise or accept someone else's advice. The author then addresses the issue of the old saying: "time cures all wounds"..... According to W. four sound mechanisms exist if you want to avoid time's healing effects and transform the past into a present source of suffering. In the exaltation of the past we find those that only remember the good things about their youth and not the years of insecurity and anxiety. In so doing, they have a consistent reserve of sadness about their miserable present...... Also, this fidelity to the past, impairs our ability to enjoy the present and fully dedicate our efforts to the endeavors of the moment. Another mechanism is to consistently dwell with the guilt complex that past errors create, finding excuses or scapegoats (our parents, God, chromosomes, teachers etc.) while doing nothing to avoid committing the same mistakes again.
The author drives his point with practical examples. For instance the story of the hammer. A man wants to hang a painting. He has the nail, but not the hammer. Therefore it occurs to him to go over to the neighbor and ask him to lend him his hammer. But at this point, doubt sets in. What if he doesn't want to lend me the hammer? Yesterday he barely spoke to me. Maybe he was in a hurry. Or, perhaps, he holds something against me. But why? I didn't do anything to him. If he would ask me to lend him something, I would, at once. How can he refuse to lend me his hammer? People like him make other people's life miserable. Worst, he thinks that I need him because he has a hammer. This is got to stop ! And suddenly the guy runs to the neighbor's door, rings, and before letting him say anything, he screams: "You can keep your hammer, you b......"
Watzlawick not only discussess techniques to create false problems, but also the ones that make it actually possible to avoid solving problems and conver them into eternal torments. Here we get the example of the man that claps his hands every ten seconds. Asked why he does that, he answers: "to drive away the elephants..." -"But why, there are no elephants here"- The guy says: "Precisely".
This is a very funny book. It deals, with a fresh and delightful approach, with many of our karmas and mind bothering mosquitoes.......

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool?
What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?
How much do parents really matter?

These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports—and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They set out to explore the inner workings of a crack gang, the truth about real estate agents, the secrets of the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, they show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing.

About the Author

Steven D. Levitt, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, given to the most influential American economist under forty. He is also a founder of The Greatest Good, which applies Freakonomics-style thinking to business and philanthropy.

Stephen J. Dubner is an award-winning author, journalist, and radio and TV personality. He quit his first career—as an almost rock star—to become a writer. He has since taught English at Columbia, worked for The New York Times, and published three non-Freakonomics books.

Matthew Ho Student Review
By Allen C. Ho
Economic concepts are always difficult to explain and tedious to understand. Supply and demand charts, lengthy equations, and complex theories can make economics a nightmare. Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner explores the “hidden side” of economics while also managing to avoid the insipidity of economics. The book is addictive and eye opening, two adjectives not generally associated with economics. Freakonomics extends our understanding of economics by presenting and examining simple scenarios where decisions are made. The authors then analyze these decisions and look for patterns. The findings in this book will leave you shocked and intrigued.
One of the successes of Freakonomics is its ability to make the reader see scenarios in new perspectives. Dubner and Levitt researched extensively for this book, and it paid off. The research conducted by these two exposed hidden truths throughout society. Sumo wrestlers, for example, were exposed and found to be cheaters. Dubner and Levitt’s revolutionary approach of quirkiness and simplicity makes Freakonomics informative yet addictive .
Don’t be fooled, however; both of these authors are well established in their fields. The diction and syntax in Dubner’s and Levitt’s Freakonomics does not represent their level of credibility and achievement
The use of simple scenarios and diction in Freakonomics can also be seen as its biggest weakness. Because Freakonomics is written at a level that does not require any economic knowledge, the book can be repetitive and annoying for people who have a decent economic background. The authors do a great job at explaining their points.
The organization of Freakonomics is also unique. The book is organized into 6 fairly unrelated chapters. The only commonality of the chapters is their explanations of economic principles. The structure and chapters could be switched and the book would stay relatively the same
Freakonomics truly is a unique piece of work. Yes, it is a book about economics, but it so much more than that. You don’t have to like economics to love Freakonomics. In fact, I think readers will like the book more if they know nothing about economics
The revolutionary technique of Levitt and Dubner is genius. By following the untraditional approach, readers are able to learn in a way that is fresh and exciting. The overwhelming amount of data allows their arguments to be nearly flawless. No loopholes; you can’t argue the numbers. Freakonomics rips apart the traditional standard of informative books and hopefully will create a new style of writing for years to come.

Freakonomics Review
By Amazon Customer
People are often drawn in by numbers and statistics. Whether it be the correlation between names and the success of the people with these names or how many people will pay for donuts when no one is looking. “Freakonomics” by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner breaks down and analysis what seem like random piles of information and draw conclusions that turn out to be shocking.

One section in the book talks about the relationship between the number of books a child owns versus the test scores they receive. Many people would guess that the more books a child owns, the higher their test scores would be. That is correct. People would also assume that reading these books often would contribute to higher test scores too. That is false. Dubner explains that while reading books does not seem to have an effect on test scores, having a lot of books does because it indicates well educated parents.

Dubner continues by discussing the effect on names on a person’s success. It is found that people with names such as DeShawn or Latanya do not perform well on test. People may assume that this has to do with the name but this actually has to do with the parents who name their children these names. Overall, it is found that uneducated, single women give their children their unique names, and because of the parent’s education, the child does not succeed in school.

The book questions a lot of controversial topics while also arousing some stunning information. A part of the book is dedicated into studying whether or not elementary teachers alter their children’s test scores, to help their reputation. It was found that some teachers do in fact do this. They were able to compare specific strings of answers in the test of students, and found that they all got these answers correct. It was also found that this strand would be toward the end of the test, where there are harder questions. The teacher assumes that the children will get the easy questions correct, and will only change the questions she thinks they will get wrong. While may seem like it doesn’t affect the students, it turns out it does greatly. It was found the after the year of the teacher cheating, the children perform much worse on tests, than children that had average scores the year before. That means the children whose teacher cheated, had actually hurt them.

The authors are usually cautious at making assumptions, and even criticize people for making them. The one flaw is during an experiment where cookies were left out on a table. The people had to pay when no one was looking. It was found that 13% of people didn’t pay. So, Dubner assumed that 87% of people were good people with good moral. He did not take into affect any of the guilt that the people would feel if they had stolen, or if they thought they were being watched or recorded.

“Freakonomics” is not so much about economics as it is about cause and effect, and correlations between things. It is an interesting read for anyone, and I would highly recommend it.

Witty, engaging and intelligent: what more could you want?
By miranda
I first found out about Freakonomics when I saw a rather eccentric, hotdog-covered book entitled 'Think Like A Freak' coauthored by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner at a local bookshop and decided to search the book up when I got home since it seemed to be like an interesting nonfiction book by authors with a lovely sense of humour. Unsurprisingly, these two authors had a few other books, one of them happening to be called 'Freakonomics' and so, I decided to make an impulse buy and ordered it on Amazon.

Can I just say, probably best decision ever?

Freakonomics showed me that economics wasn't such a boring field of study after all and gave me what it was really about: a study of incentives to help analyse data and draw logical conclusions from it. Levitt utilises this logic to answer quirky, unasked questions like 'what do sumo wresters and teachers have in common?', 'what's the reason for the 90's drop in crime?' or even 'why do drug dealers still live with their mothers?' to showcase the many uses of economic principles and meanwhile explain other concepts like information asymmetry or clarifying the difference between correlation and causation.

Overall, a really good read and investment of time. This book gets you to think a little differently about the world and open up solutions to problems that you might not've had before. Would 100% recommend to anyone; this is the kind of book that's so delightful it could hook anyone, no matter one's preferences for book genre.

Good, easy reader for Chinese learners
By A. Kravitz
This reader ("Josh Duyiwuer") helps fill a gap in the materials currently available to Chinese learners. Textbooks are pretty boring, while real books are too hard until reaching a very high level. There are very few in-between materials, and this is especially true when it comes to traditional characters (and again even more true when it comes to ebooks).

Josh Duyiwuer is written in traditional characters, simplified characters, and pinyin, each separated into its own section. The story itself is decent, simple and repetitious by design, telling the story of a 9th grader's trials and tribulations. It's really a "young adult" story, but it was entertaining enough to keep this old adult reading.

According to the notes, the reader contains 417 unique characters, which probably means it's best suited for high-beginner/low-intermediate Chinese learners. It could also be useful for higher level students who want to refresh their knowledge or increase their reading speed.

There are no explanations of the grammar, but the grammar used is simple enough that there shouldn't be a problem for students at the suggested level. As for the vocabulary, I actually didn't realize there was a glossary when I first read this because the glossary is all the way at the end of the book and I only read the traditional characters section which comes up front. For me it wasn't an issue as the occasional new word was easy enough to figure out from context, but if a large portion of the vocab is unfamiliar, I'd wait to read this book as as it's not convenient to check the glossary while reading.

Overall I recommend this book as a way to strengthen vocabulary, improve reading speed, and just get the feeling of what it's like to read Chinese for pleasure.

Very good reader for learning Chinese
By Amazon Customer
Pros
Has both traditional and simplified character versions
Glossary has both pinyin and characters
Glossary definitions is specifically tailored to usage in the story
Lots of repetition of basic patterns and vocab

Cons
No access to audio version
A few typos
Kindle dictionary won't translate traditional characters

This Chinese reader has pinyin, simplified and traditional character versions all in one book. On Kindle, its one of the few that has traditional characters and the only one I found so far that has all three. Thankfully each version is in its own section so you can truly get immersed in each one without the other interfering. Chinese readers that have the pinyin written directly above or below the characters become quite a distraction for many of us so you won't have that problem here.

The book is generally well written except for a few typos, which really wasn't a big deal especially as the author stated in the beginning this was a new book and was likely to have a few mistakes.

At times the story was pretty good and was easy to get immersed inside the story line and issues confronting the characters. At other times, it was pretty obvious I was reading a book written by a Chinese teacher and not a professional writer as the story wasn't as well developed as some other readers and contained a few thinly disguised attacks on a competing Chinese learning product (i.e., Rosetta Stone). At which time, it felt more like I was reading a rant on a forum than a well thought out story consistent with other readers. However, this didn't negatively affect the learning process at all.

A bit unusual compared to other books is that the story is told entirely from the perspective of one person who is mostly talking to himself without third person narration. This made the dialogue much more conversational compared to traditional stories in readers from Chinese Breeze and Mandarin Companion.

My only real complaint, which so far is true for all Kindle Chinese readers, is that there is no link to download audio so one can practice their listening skills as well as reading. The Kindle dictionary also won't translate traditional characters - simplified only. This obviously is a problem with the Kindle app and not the author but it does slow down the learning process when one comes upon an unknown character.

All in all though, an excellent reader and a must for any Chinese student with an interest in learning traditional characters.

Fair Warning … This isn’t a sappy romance. It’s not sweet. It’s far from anything you would want to imagine. This is a story to leave you feeling dirty. Nothing about us is normal. Nothing about us is natural. Can love ultimately be defined in such ways, truly? This is our story. He is a hit man, the very one who took my family the night that changed us both forever. Something in my eyes stopped him from killing me. Something in my eyes called out for him to take me. At ten, he captured me. At fifteen, he consumed me. And at eighteen, he owned me. Outsiders think he’s my father … That is so far from the truth. Our twisted desires fuel the darkness that lies deep inside us both. My innocence never existed, and he takes me as I am.

Sandra's View "Hated the End"
By Sandra
The book had 1865 locations on my kindle. The book was about a young girl, named Fallyn "Aka Angelina" Aka" Angel and a man, named Giano. Fallyn was 10 year old girl, who was being, raised by a sexually abusive father and a neglectful mother. Giano was a sweet, caring and thoughtful contract killer. He decides to keep Fallyn, whom he calls Angel after the death of her parents. The book contained a couple of murders, and 1 decent sex scene near the end. I liked the Angel character. She was curious, confused, grateful, and traumatized, by her past. I loved the Giano character. He was generous, concerned, compassionate and willing to give, Angel, anything to make her happy. He was not nor did he become a child molester. I was totally blind sided by the ending. I was shocked and disappointed by what occurred, during the last few pages,

SPOILER ALERT:
There are 2 alternate endings, but there is NO happy ending, for Giano and Angel. I repeat Angel and Giano DO not end up together, at the end of this book.

Very dark..
By Cindy O
I applaud authors who want to step out of their normal writing box and write something that's shocking, dark and very taboo. But there is also a risk of either the subject matter or story being a little out of the comfort zone of the reader.

The author wastes no time in introducing the shocking and taboo parts of the book in the first chapter. If you can stomach the first chapter the rest until the end isn't so bad. One thing I am not a fan of putting a character through hell giving them a tiny glimpse of normal and then yanking it from them again at the end for reasons that really dont make sense.

Something I had not seen before was the author gave us two epilogues so you can decide how you wanted it to end. I got how the heroine could go either way but after reading the book I was left very unsatisfied with all the outcomes. For me where it went wrong was the last chapter before the epilogues.

Reviews from the Heart Review
By The Ordinary Housewife
I find it necessary to start off with the

warning that this book is not for the faint of heart or for anyone who is easily offended. That having

been said, this is an extremely well written look into the dark side of human nature and the price

required to indulge in that dark side. This story is about a young girl named Fallyn who is being sexually

abused by her father and her escape from that painful life at the hands of a dark stranger. Fallyn was

given the choice to assume the identity of the dark stranger’s recently deceased daughter Angelina in

order to have an entirely new life and she does just this. It was extremely difficult for me to read Fallyn’s

story, especially the parts where her father touches her. It was also not easy to read about these difficult

and almost surreal decisions that she was continuously forced to make in order to survive and it truly

broke my heart to read about all of these terrible things happening to her. In my opinion, no child

should ever be placed in horrible situations like this, especially by the very people who are supposed to

be protecting them and keeping them safe. In reality however, this is not always the case and horrible

things like this happen each and every day. Setting my own personal hesitations in reading this type of

material aside, the author handles writing about this subject matter with incredible skill and finesse. I

freely admit that there were several points throughout this story where I had to stop and take a break

because the material became almost too overwhelming and dark in nature and I did not want to

continue at the time. I am extremely happy that I pushed past my own reservations and forced myself to

read this story to its completion since the story as a whole is a beautiful message of self-love and hope

even in the darkest of times. This story cannot be taken at face value as simply a dark romance, or the

most intensely beautiful and moving points will be easily overlooked. Fallyn’s journey is not full of

happiness and great times, but instead is a story of a girl who is handed a horrible life and does

whatever she can to make the best of it and create something for herself. I feel compelled to give the

warning that this book does not have a happy ending in the standard sense. However, if we look at

where she started off we can truly allow ourselves to appreciate that this is the ending that she needed

to have. The author includes an apology for the reader in order to address this lack of a typical happy

ending and she states that in order to truly find happiness, we must first find happiness within

ourselves. This could not be more true and I take that message away with me from reading this book

and will hold it closely to my heart. I highly recommend reading this book to anyone who is willing to

look past the darkness into the light that lives within and for those who are willing to forgo the typical

happy ending in exchange for a deeper and more meaningful reading experience. I am truly thankful to

have read this book as this is one of those books that carves a place inside of you and stays with you

forever.

Great book!
By Ricardo
This book is very well written by professor Marcos Arandia. As noted in the book it "presents ideas of some of the greatest minds in as close to their original form as possible, while at the same time providing short commentaries...that guide students toward a clearer understanding..." This is a great book for students beginning to study moral philosophy.
