Actual Interaction that happened (I am only half way through this book)...

I have not finished the book yet but I want to share an incident that happened to me half way through reading it...

I will use this story as a review because I think different people can draw different references/insights from a story.

On my way home from grabbing dinner, I saw a girl and decided to be social and started talking to her. We hit it off really well and was sharing about our views on various topics. I invited her back to my place to continue our conversation and she agreed. Once we got to my place (my roommate was there), we chatted for another 20 mins. During this 20 mins, we talked about things like governments, religions, sexuality, and kinks/fetishes.

The more that I got to know her, the more I became interested in her…she is my type of girl

After about 20 mins or so she needed to go so I offered to walk to her back (because I genuinely care for her safety). Our conversation continued as we went in her house. The interesting thing is that we have so many shared interests and views we can talk for hours. We chilled for a little bit more. I decided to head out her place around 1:00am. Normally I would tell a girl that I was interested in them from the get-go; but for some reason, I was enjoying her company and had the mindset that since I am someone worthy of getting girls….I will let my personality take care of the rest. So towards the end, as I was leaving, I felt something was off because even though we were enjoying each other’s company, nothing was happening. So I sensed that I was in the friend zone.

As we were parting ways at her front door, I followed my #1 rule set for myself [to be honest and express my expression of love to women that I am interested in] and spoke my mind & expressed my interest for her. Then we walked back into her house and she gave me that talk about she is on/off with her ex and that we can hang out as friends, blah blah blah (basically the 'lets be friends speech'). Even though I got the "friend's" speech, I was proud to be able to bring the interaction to a place where I will be rejected as a man.

I am in the beginning of my journey, but there were a couple of concepts that I applied from reading the book that I was proud of:
1. I started the conversation by saying the first thing that came into my mind...I actually didn't think about the actual approach. It was natural.
2. I chatted with a complete stranger and brought her back to my place in 20 mins.
3. I was being social and had a genuine connection with meeting someone in the street…even at night!
4. Walked into her house without any awkward hesitation, I was focusing on the conversation and getting to know her instead of having alternative motives.
5. Instead of thinking about 'what to say' and/or 'what to do next'...I focus on being in the moment and listening to her. In other words, I chose to be interested rather than interesting.

When reflecting back to the whole interaction....these are the lessons that I learned (I think this book will cover these topic). These lessons will be ingrained in my head since she was my ideal type of women and I do not want to make these mistakes again in the future:
1. I am going to still have to show her that I am attracted to her by making more physical contacts with her.
2. I am going to have to be 100% comfortable with my desire + express it wholeheartly because otherwise, I am disrespecting her repressing how I feel.
3. I need to simply "Go for it", don't think about it or let her think about it in the name of honesty and respect.

Nothing Short of Perfect

I'm biased - Nick is one of my close friends, and we've worked together for years. So I've also seen this book evolve and become what it is today, which - in my opinion - is nothing short of perfect.

Nick has a gift for teaching the "secret language" of attraction... the stuff that's going on under the surface. He's able to identify and explain how and why attraction happens, and the amazing thing is that it's RIGHT THERE in plain sight. You've seen it and quite possibly done it. You just can't repeat it when it matters most... until you read As You Are.

For example, his first chapter, on "Holding Space". It's a shockingly easy concept to grasp, but when I think back to all of the times that I apologetically approached women (and obviously got rejected), or even times that I've been in professional settings, and intimidated by those around me, I think... man, EVERYONE should know this. Again - it's right there in plain sight, but you don't think about it until Nick points it out to you. Then you fix it, and everyone responds to you better, and you're like "oh - I knew how to do that all along... so why haven't I been doing it?"

The counterpoint to all of this: if you're looking for lines or routines or tricks, you won't find them here. So there's a certain segment of guys who are probably going to buy this and say "yeah, but what do I say in this situation or that situation?"

And of course, that's not the point. Attraction happens below the surface of words. You already know this, and if you want to know how to master it, then you also know it's not what you say, it's how you say it. And that's exactly where this book deserves every star I'm giving it.

The Essential Book 99% Of The Dating Community Needs To Read

There are certain people who you never forget about in your life, because there are no words to describe how they impacted you. They are the few who "bring you across the divide," from one world of experience to another.

One of these strange, uncommon people is Nick Sparks.

A disclaimer for those who read on: I am biased. I’ve worked with Nick, and I’ve seen not only how he’s helped others upgrade their lives but I’ve had the privilege of being apart of the community of likeminded men he’s created around the world (indeed, I got lunch with one of them today).

But more than any of that, I know on a personal level the quality of Nick’s teachings because of how he's transformed MY life. I was a guy who, despite years studying “pick up” and consuming thousands of dollars worth of dating advice, just couldn’t get it. I struggled with women, especially the ones I really liked, and felt fake and inauthentic.

So after a particularly terrible experience with a girl I decided it was time to really invest in myself and purchase Nick’s weekend bootcamp.

My life after it was never same.

To make a long story short, I went from having a mediocre dating life, where I struggled to make connections and keep girls interested, to dating multiple girls - honestly, without games or bulls*** - with the knowledge and freedom that wherever I ended up I could create the dating life I wanted.

And I did.

Fastforward four years from that fateful weekend and I’m married to the girl of my dreams and I have my own successful dating company. And I couldn’t have done any of it without what Nick showed me.

But enough about me. Because I have some good news and bad news.

The bad news is Nick is retired. And unfortunately, there is no replacement for live coaching, where you have someone cheerlead you on past your fears and insecurities, and correct your mistakes in real time.

But the good news is that all of that wisdom Nick distilled from his experiences, all that knowledge he dropped on us those weekends, is in this book.

And the better news is that unlike the $3000 I and many others happily paid for it all, you can get it here for a mere $8.

(Frankly, if you’re too “strapped for cash” to make this investment, good luck getting your dating life handled, because clearly your priorities aren’t in the right place)

Note for those of you who have consumed a lot of dating advice already: this book is not like other dating books. Trust me, as a dating coach I’ve read them all. While it’s immensely practical, it’s not filled with techniques. Nick’s material is disarmingly different from the rest of the dating world’s. Unlike most, he gets you out of your head and into the present moment by having you focus on the “big picture” essentials, and helps you not to sweat the small stuff (this is usually reversed, to the readers detriment). And rather than try and change you, like most “gurus," Nick shows you how to get the dating life you want without compromising on key elements of your personality. In other words: As You Are.

So buy it. It’s not only straightforward and refreshingly ungimmicky, it’s also well written and easy to read. I can vouch for this stuff changing my life. And it will change yours too, if you implement it.

Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is a writer, speaker, and Associate Professor of Constitutional Law at John Jay College (CUNY). As a Civil Rights attorney, she litigated cases for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc., Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, and Southern Poverty Law Center. She taught in the Africana program at Vassar College. Gloria Browne-Marshall is Founder/Director of The Law and Policy Group, Inc., a journalist who covers the U.S. Supreme Court, a playwright, and author of several books on justice under law.

I feel sorry for the American students that have to read and pay for such an unworthy book

Thank God I had the ability to only rent this book for $18 which I consider too much for such an unworthy book.

In my entire Academic course I have not seen such a bad written book.
It consists of dry information and the author jumps from one topic to another within a paragraph.
There is no consistent flow of events and in many cases the content deviates from the facts discussed within two sentences. For instance, you read about case A and in the next sentence the author jumps to case B just to explain the case C on the third sentence. Not to mention that the timeline of the cases can be all over the place. Case A might be before the 1947, case B before the civil war and case C somewhere in the middle.
Furthermore the end notes provide little or no evidence/information of the sources used something that questions the validity of the information used in the book.

Overall it is very bad book and I feel very sorry that American Students have to pay for it and try to get an A.
It needs way more work to become a worthy book and students should have other choices since they pay the hard worked money for this.

Routledge, should know better. Author's like this one, destroy the name and the fame of the publisher.

If I had a choice, I would ask for money back.

This here is what you get and a great read it is

When your college professor writes a book and assigns it a required text for the curriculum... This here is what you get and a great read it is! (Wink, thanks Professor Browne) the text focuses on issues in American society that aren't often focused on typical textbook literature. Unlike other texts that are usually required for law students, this book tells stories in words that both compliment and criticize the way our society functions.

It presents an error taxonomy which integrates individual, technological and organizational factors based on cognitive engineering principles. In addition to the necessary theoretical foundation, it provides a step-by-step description of how the taxonomy can be applied to analyse as well as predict performance using a context-dependent cognitive model.

CREAM can be used as a second-generation human reliability analysis (HRA) approach in probabilistic safety assessment (PSA), as a stand-alone method for accident analysis and as part of a larger design method for interactive systems. In particular, the use of CREAM will enable system designers and risk analysts to:
• identify tasks that require human cognition and therefore depend on cognitive reliability
• determine the conditions where cognitive reliability and ensuing risk may be reduced

About the Author
Dr. Erik Hollnagel is Principal Advisor at the OECD Halden Reactor Project (Norway) and Adjunct Professor of Human-Machine Interaction at the University of Linkoping (Sweden). He has many years of experience with man-machine systems acquired in both industry and universities, and has worked extensively with the problems of human reliability and human-machine interaction in the fields of nuclear power, aerospace and computer systems. Dr. Hollnagel is the author of more than 200 papers and five books in the fields of man-machine systems, interface design, expert systems, cognitive engineering and human reliability. He is currently Chairman of the European Association for Cognitive Ergonomics (EACE).

Insightful discussion of human performance in complex systems

Dr. Hollnagel's book provides an excellent background and introduction to the challenges facing designers and operators of complex systems who wish to account for human performance. He provides a thoughtful discussion of cognitive and organizational mechanisms that influence human behavior and provides a practical and throrough guide to understanding and assessing the implications of system design on human performance. This book will be a valuable reference and source of knowledge for system developers and maintainers of complex systems and technologies.

Kindle version: Text quality is poor

Not really sure what's up with the text on this version. It is searchable, and you can change the font size, but the font itself has the appearance of a poor-quality scanned document. Some of the table information is unreadable. Haven't read the book yet, but for $115 this should be exemplary, and it's far from it.

These are the political and social hostilities generated from differing systems of moral understanding involving such issues as abortion, homosexuality, families, education, laws, elections, censorship, media, and the arts. In the past, ancient animosities had been expressed along religious lines: Protestants versus Catholics, Christians versus Jews. Now the culture wars are the issues-centered conflicts between two passionately polarized groups, the "orthodox" and the "progressive." Concluding that the moderate voices within this public discourse are usually eclipsed, Hunter suggests some practical steps for us to acquire new analytical tools to resolve cultural conflict. America's ``identity'' is seen as a history of religious strife in this probing yet somewhat slanted study. Hunter (Sociology and Religious Studies/Univ. of Virginia; American Evangelicalism, 1983) uses historical references to religious battles throughout American history to show how yesterday's ecumenical divisions among Catholics, Protestants, and Jews have become realigned in recent years. Through debates about slavery, the Scopes trial, and the influence of deism on the Constitution, he elaborates on the ``new lines of conflict'' through the eyes of both clergy members and the more ``humanist'' intelligentsia. Hunter is adept at demonstrating how the battles are now between ``orthodox'' and ``progressive'' camps within faiths, and how political mine fields like gay rights, Roe v. Wade, and the ordination of women into the priesthood prompt a nagging concern over the roles of churches and synagogues in American life. The author has a pervasive regard for the role of family--possibly ``the beginning and end of contemporary culture'' since its dissolution may prove fatal to our social order. He also illustrates how the classic dualism between God and Satan has been transformed into an often unscrupulous intrigue between traditionalists and ``secular humanists.'' But Hunter betrays a possible bias regarding homosexuality. Here, the anti-gay ``convictions'' of a Jerry Falwell are treated as more worthy of serious debate than the fulminations against the ``evils'' of race- mixing or ``the Jewish Menace.'' In the end, Hunter seems to favor religious thinking over nontranscendental doctrines. Why the culture wars continue?

This was a textbook for me in seminary. I am in a conservative Presbyterian denomination and studied at a very conservative seminary, and this book got some interesting reviews from the students.
For me, it was a little difficult, since I don't have much background in sociology, but as I trudged through it I really grew to appreciate it. Some of my other classmates loved it too, but there were several who were quite taken aback by it. They didn't like it because Hunter didn't come out and condemn those who were on the wrong side of the culture wars.
But that is just the point - in this book he does not try to point out who is wrong and who is right, his object is to demonstrate why neither side is able to persuade, or prevail against the other.
Each side in the culture war has it's own set of presuppositions and assumptions that it speaks from. Because of this, that which seems most persuasive to one side completely misses those on the other side, because they don't share the same presuppositions. We are talking past one another.
Another problem that Hunter addresses is the issue of extremes and inflammatory rhetoric. Hunter says that, by and large, the culture wars are being fought by people on the extreme ends of their positions. So, the battle of the culture wars is usually fought with inflammatory rhetoric that doesn't persuade, it just angers.
As a sidenote I recently read a story about how communists used to train their young recruits. This particular communist said that when a young person adopted communism the best thing they could do was immediately set them on a street corner passing out communist leaflets. They would get attacked mercilessly, but this attack would only serve to harden and solidify the young communist in his or her beliefs.
I think Hunter shows this - the inflammatory rhetoric used by those on the extreme ends of the culture war debates, only serves to harden the other side in their respective positions.
So, if you are looking for quick answers, or a strategy to defeat your opponents, you won't find it here. But, if you are willing to begin to at least try to understand your opponents, as well as the larger issues, this is a great place to start.

A wide-angle view on American society...

Though the book was published originally published in 1991, it is no wonder that this book is still in print: it is as relevant as ever - and I daresay its relevance is increasing again.

In this book, Hunter gives us a wide-angle view of what is going on in American society since the second half of the twentieth century. Hunter argues that there is a culture war going on. Consequently, he aims at describing the historical and socio-political backgrounds of this cultural conflict.

In five parts, Hunter introduces the culture war (prologue and chapters 1 and 2), maps the lines of conflict (chapters 3 and 4), describes the means of the warfare: the discourse and technology (chapters 5 and 6), and extensively describes the fields of conflict: family, education, media and the arts, law, and electoral politics (chapters 7-11), and finally points out possibilities for a resolution (chapter 12 and the epilogue).

Hunter defines a cultural conflict as "political and social hostility rooted in different systems of moral understanding" (42). According to Hunter, the culture war in America revolves around different worldviews, "our most fundamental and cherished assumptions about how to order or lives - our own lives and our lives together in this society" (42). The contemporary culture war is "a struggle over national identity - over the meaning of America, who we have been in the past, who we are now, and perhaps most important, who we, as a nation, will aspire to become in the new millennium" (50).

Though Hunter acknowledges that the culture war is fought out mainy by the elite and 'knowledge workers', this cultural conflict intersects the lives of most Americans, because the conflict has an impact on every institution of American society: family, education, media, law, and politics.

Hunter writes brilliantly, avoiding jargon as much as possible and defining many concepts with exceptional clarity. This book is really an excellent read.

A personal note:

I am a European citizen and often quite puzzled by what is going on in America. This book gave me a really good perspective on the backgrounds of some American discussions, such as Intelligent Design and why the evolution-creation struggle constantly revolves around education textbooks.

Moreover, this book also made me realize that in contemporary Europe there are plenty of signs that, perhaps, a European culture war is at hand...

An eye-opener, most definitely!

Still Relevent and Timely After All These Years!

The title of my review refers to the fact that this book, while published in '91, is still quite an accurate portrayal of how the culture wars are conducted. The passing of 13 years and tenure of two presidents has not served to ameliorate the culture war between 'traditionalists' and 'progressives.' Hunter, then, was certainly right.

Hunter's main thesis with this book is that, quite frankly, the culture war being fought over our schools, family policy, law, entertainment, etc. is not a war that will likely EVER engender a consensus. In fact, as it stands now, it seems even to proclude rational debate in favor of charged rhetoric, miscaricaturizations of opponents, and...well...mudslinging.

Hunter asserts this thesis, backs it up with chronicles of how the culture war has been conducted thus far, and conjectures as to why it is so. First, he says, we are dealing with core philosophic differences over questions to do with 'how the world should be.' Thus, both sides have deep emotions on the said issues. Second, there is no incentive to try and foster consensus because in an adversarial system like ours, the game is about power - the power to get your policy instituted and your other's quashed. Third, each 'side' operates using somewhat incompatible philosophic assumptions. To the anti-abortion-rights activist, it is a child and abortion is murder. To the abortion rights activist, it is only potential life and prohibiting abortion is denying the mother freedom of person. Where one sees freedom (either of the mother or fetus), the other sees either servitude or murder. Incomatibilities like these, says Hunter, will ensure that there will be no satisfactory end to the culture war - just a long, tiring, rhetorically charged, and endless, struggle.

Hunter makes his arguments well, is quite convincing, and is as objective as possible. He gives both sides due consideration, never caricaturizing them. While the book focuses on the culture wars from somewhat of a religious perspective (Catholic and Evangelical v. Liberal Protestant and Jew) in the end, the book is about the culture war PERIOD. Highly reccomended reading.

The Best Mob Story You've Never Heard

"Excellent Cadavers" is probably the best mob story you've never heard.

Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, two heroic Italian prosecutors, mounted an extraordinary legal campaign against the Sicilian mafia during the 1980s. They ultimately paid for their efforts with their lives. But their untimely murders shook Italy so hard they toppled its government. Theirs is a compelling story, full of unforgettable characters, and all of it is tragic and true. And chances are high that you don't know much about it.

Why? Probably because it is about prosecutors. Prosecutors are not sexy. Prosecutors are, almost by definition, uncool. And popular culture is all about cool. Pop culture loves Henry Hill in "Goodfellas," Michael Corleone in "The Godfather" and Tony Montana in "Scarface." Popular culture loves bad guys.

Bad guys may be bad, but they are also cool. They get drunk and do mountains of coke and pull guns on one another and get into situations that are crazy and compelling; they're not likable, but they're always watchable. Good guys, by contrast, seem boring--they're the ones busting up the party the bad guys invited us to. We sometimes admire the good guys from a distance, but it is easier to feel dingy in the light of their halos. Still, we don't necessarily want to be them--they work hard and go home to their wives and live boring lives.

Except for Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

These men were hard workers, yes, but they worked in a truly topsy-turvy world where good was bad and bad was good, where government was riddled with corruption and graft, where outlaws clung to strange codes of behavior whereby killing someone was fine but swearing in front of a woman was unacceptable. In southern Italy in the 1980s, an estimated 10,000 people died in mob-related violence, but fathers sometimes didn't report the murders of their sons to the local police, for fear of retribution.

Amidst such lawlessness, Falcone and Borsellino put together the Palermo maxi-trial, a titanic anti-mafia case that required the construction of an elaborate concrete bunker courtroom and ultimately led to an incredible 344 convictions. Stille recounts the events leading up to this trial with an eye for detail but also the ability to step back and encapsulate the detail; he never fails to see the forest for the trees. Writing about the eve of the maxi-trial, he describes how the prosecutors and their families were confined for their own safety on an island known as "the Alcatraz of Italy." It was, Stille writes, "a telling indication of the upside-down nature of life in Sicily on the eve of the maxi-trial: mafia fugitives moved freely about Palermo while government prosecutors had to live in prison for their own protection."

Fighting the good fight put both men in a bad spot with both the lawbreakers and the lawmakers. Falcone was maneuvered out of his position in Palermo and ultimately assassinated; Borsellino was killed six months later. But their death lead to their greatest triumphs, for their murders awakened a nation to the corruption of the ruling Christian Democrats and caused the downfall of Italy's First Republic.

Ultimately, Stille's book is great not because he tells this story, but because he makes us care. Falcone and Borsellino come off as principled but pragmatic, saintly but shrewd; Stille makes their goodness real and compelling. If you're anything like me, you'll read this and hope someone makes it into a miniseries; you will find yourself rooting for the good guys, and realizing that good guys still exist; you will weep at their deaths, and their ultimate victory.

A totally first rate work of reporting and writing. stille's book never drowns in its detail, but remains readable and informative, even for someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of italian politics. he really brings anti-mafia investigators borsellino and falcone alive, and comes as close as anyone can to trying to explain what drives former prime minister andreotti. if you are interested in italy, this is a great historical document. if you aren't, treat it as a great crime thriller, except that it's all true.

Tracy Hogg cared for babies and their families for over 24 years. She trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital and continued her education in midwifery and caring for newborns at St James' Hospital in Leeds and St Catherine's Hospital, Doncaster. Practical solutions to various problems

If Tracy Hogg's first book 'Secrets of the Baby Whisperer' provides a great introduction to overall parenting, this book gives very specific solutions to specific problems. However, I did not find some of the suggestions that much helpful as I became more discouraged when I felt like I am doing all I can and our baby is really not falling under the approach she describes. I kept thinking, what am I doing wrong that our baby is not doing what she says all these other babies do!? For example, when our baby started to take short naps and it really messed up his 3 hour E.A.S.Y routine, I kept trying to put him back to sleep and he wouldn’t as he wasn’t as tired anymore. When reading her book, it made me feel like it is because I am not timing perfectly or not staying long enough for Shush-patting. Eventually, after reading ‘Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child’, I felt much better knowing that babies do develop sleep patterns over time, and I may just have to accept the fact that he is taking short naps and move on. Overall, I do think that the book provides some practical solutions to various problems moms may encounter as we hone our skills during our first few months.

Great book that actually teaches parents how to schedule a baby

Best, most comprehensive baby book. Full of helpful tips and tricks! Down-to-earth and practical. Used it for both my sons, and they are now great sleepers and enjoy the benefits of a predictable schedule, which this book helped us put into place. She goes into great detail about how to teach a toddler to sleep through the night (along with many other issues older babies and toddlers may have). It is much harder when they are older, but it can be done, and she has detailed plans that will get you there. Hogg mentions that if you do the things in this book early in your baby's life, you will not need the book when they are older (and still don't sleep through the night at 9 months, or still nurse to sleep at 12 months, for instance). In our experience, she is correct. We got both our boys on her schedule system from a couple of months on, and we did not need the book for very long. Our youngest is one. I haven't referred to this book in 6 months because he has a solid schedule and good eating and sleeping habits, thanks to this book.

This book saved our sanity! We started reading this book when our son was around 2 months old, and he was sleeping through the night by 3 months old! The sleep training information was priceless! Now, you have to be consistent and it takes a lot of effort in the beginning, but if you follow her instructions....in the end this book will save you so many sleepless nights! That's worth every penny!!
