Great Scholarly Book
By Booker
This is a scholarly, well-researched book that does a great job of teaching Egyptian hieroglyphs in a rigorous fashion. It also adds color in the passing remarks and observations of Professor Selden. For example, the modern-day Egyptian (vulgar) word for the verb "to copulate" is identical to the ancient Egyptian verb with the same meaning. It's remarkable that, after millennia of conquests by Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and others, the Egyptians have retained this particular word in their vocabulary.
Such color makes this work a great compliment to another great book: James Allen's "Middle Egyptian."
I'm sad to see that Professor Selden's book is now out of print and wish the publisher would make it available again in some digital form for interested readers. I'm certainly glad I have my copy!

A Good Counter to Allen's "Middle Egyptian"
By Larry Rogers Logographic
I recently got to look through this book.
Allen's 2000 / 2010 work is very East Coast whereas Selden's is West Coast. Allen is an Egyptologist who does Grammar ( I wouldn't call it Linguistics, he's just no Lorpieno at all, who himself is no Linguist in deed ), whereas Selden is a Literature Professor who does Linguistics. Selden, I think, is not a Linguist, but he's on-par with Loprieno and maybe excels him at times. Like the West Coast School (of Linguistics and Anthropology) Joseph Greenberg and Joseph Campbell, Selden has the big picture.
But the book was put together much faster than Allen's "Middle Egyptian" and is the worse for it. But that's part of its raisson d'etre, you see. Allen's East Coast school is very European, very proper, very archaic and out-of-date in its approach, mono-discipline instead of inter-disciplinary, and the result is really a poor replacement for Gardiner's "Egyptian Grammar", which itself was actually a poor replacement (though both more up-to-date) of Champollion's enthusiastic Grammaire.
Selden, wow, is just very very West Coast and Hollywood and in-your-face relevant. But his textbook contains references to dildos (which he calls a "boy toy" - very slang) and some other off-color / vulgar stuff that I forget. Very West Coast, very Hollywood. I don't think such obscene references were common, but that they were there is of note. This is like that more mainstream "how to read egyptian hieroglyphs" book where the British Feminist author makes some reference to burning bras. Me, I like everything about the book except references to dildos and the like. Maybe this is the way the West is going, but I won't be going with it, and I'm really sure that a ton of Americans, even know, won't care this sort of thing in this book.
I think he makes up his own examples of the language, whereas Allen pulls his from actual texts (but lamely without citations).
So which one wins, Allen's or Selden's ? I think Allen's wins for being more meaty - Selden doesn't have essays. Ultimately, to me, Allen's is not at all a primer, I see Budge's works as the best in that area, but more like the must-have reference grammar for Middle Egyptian. I don't think Selden's trumps it for that.
But I do think that most Egyptologists and others would benefit from using Selden's book instead of Allen's. It's sufficiently up-to-date, and more of where scholarship should be going. The concept of Egyptology as isolated from other disciplines is harmful though prevalent. Egyptology needs to open up, revise its stupid mainstream chronology, and open themselves up to modern comparative anthropology. We need less snooty dumb Egyptologists and more Egyptologists who go out there and document the nearby African cultures which are related to ancient Egypt but hardly known. Ancient Egypt was an Afro-Asiatic culture and I myself have found tons of evidence that, lo and behold, just like for Semitic studies, there are tons of Afro-Asiatic cultures still alive and well but under-studied, to the detriment of our understanding of Ancient Egypt. We also need to go back to the days when one curator covered Assyrian and Egyptian antiquities. Having them as totally separate fields is just not good for either. None of these ancient near east civilizations were all that different from the other, or worth having on total sepearate pages in terms of scholarship.
So to Selden - I see what you did there.
I take Selden's book as his response to Allen's "Middle Egyptian". And it's a welcome one, at that. Sans the immorality, long live the (currently minority) West Coast school of anthropology and Linguistics. I guess this could be a call for the The University of Utah to produce a reference grammar of Middle Egyptian, but it isn't. What we need is dictionary, corpus, and bibliography in French, German, or English, of any number of other hieroglyphic writing systems, especially Oracle Bone Script Chinese. Egyptian is just done to death. Even something for the general public on Akkadian or Sumerian would be ever-so-welcome. Instead, Egyptian, Egyptian, Egyptian.
