About the Author
Bob was born and raised in Rockland County. After raising three daughters and a career in education he decided to change the tempo of life and began a new occupation as a full-time writer of automotive history. This was simply an extension of what he had been doing since his preadolescent years when he and his brother would collect sales brochures from any auto dealer who wouldn't show them the exit. Ever since he was in elementary school Bob was fascinated by the hopped-up Fords and Chevys (and even an occasional Plymouth) of the late '30's and '40's that the older "cool" boys drove to school. Recollections of those cars from long ago instantly came to mind when he first saw the PT Cruiser in 2000. Having previously written numerous articles and several books on Chrysler vehicles, his interest in the PT as the subject of a forthcoming volume was instantaneous.

�� Nature—tenderly intricate, ruthlessly impervious—is a constant and ambiguous presence in these poems, along with the social observation one would expect in a novelist.� No occasion is too modest or too daily to excite metaphysical wonder, or to provoke a lyrical ingenuity of language.� Yet even the wittiest of the poems are rooted to the ground of experience and fact.� “Seven Odes to Seven Natural Processes” attempt to explicate the physical world with a directness seldom attempted in poetry.� Several longer poems—“Leaving Church Early,” “Midpoint”—use autobiography to proclaim the basic strangeness of existence.

This collection gathers more than 300 of Updike's poems, some written in his youth and others very recently. Admirers of his fiction know that verbal precision, edged with wit, is one of Updike's hallmarks, and readers will fall upon his light verse with delighted recognition of its sheer cleverness. As a versifier, Updike knows full well how to use tools for the purposes of play, but he doesn't (usually) overindulge; even in the case of "occasional" poems, he polishes and polishes a passing subject with a certain modesty, until it shimmers: "White Dwarf," written to mark the discovery of "the smallest known star," salutes "A little pill in endless night, / An antidote to cosmic fright." The trouble, though, begins with his sober poetry. For some reason, when he works in this vein, Updike's ear tends to falter, his judgment often errs and the poetry wanders into dangerously trivial territory. This is puzzling, since Updike's sense of rhythm in prose is exceptional, and his perceptions are bound so intimately with those rhythms. Not so here, unfortunately.

If this collection is any indication, Updike is as prolific a poet as he is a novelist and critic. Nothing--airplane travel, a bug in the sink, a darning egg, a pair of eyeglasses--is too mundane a subject for the many sonnets, odes, and other traditional verse forms that seem to flow effortlessly from his pen. Many of the poems read like limbering-up exercises for the intricately wrought prose of his novels. The greatest weakness here (as in the fiction) is the preciosity and coyness of style, which, thankfully, is relieved by an unerring eye and self-deprecating wit: a pillow is "a bowl of dreams," light switches are "nipples on the walls' flat chests," and July evokes "deep pools of shade beneath dense maples/ the dapples as delicious as lemon drops--/ textures of childhood, and its many flavors!" Perhaps a slender selected poems would have better shown off Updike's gift for light verse than this exhaustive, bricklike volume. Recommended for comprehensive collections of American literature or poetry.

So Very Enjoyable

Whether light verse or more serious, John Updike's poetry is so engaging and accessible. His legacy is rooted in his short stories and the "Rabbit" quartet of novels, but Updike's poetry deserves and repays reading. This is the definitive collection, reasonably priced, attractively arranged. Do give it a try.

A poem is a poem is a poem, right? Wrong. At least to me poetry is something that comes from within, something that's born perfect, something that doesn't need the craftsman. I know I'll draw a lot of criticism from the school of thought that swears by crafted poetry, but no, that's not my cuppa.
John Updike has always passed this touchstone test of mine, more so in this collection. True, not all pieces in this volume are spontaneous, but thanks to his respect for poetry, he has segregated his poems from his "light verse." In his own words, "In making this collection, I wanted to distinguish my poems from my light verse. My principle of segregation has been that a poem derives from the real (the given, the substantial) world and light verse from the man-made world of information - books, newspapers, words, signs. If a set of lines brought back something to me something I actually saw or felt, it was not light verse. If it took its spark from language and stylized signifiers, it was."
The fact that Updike understands the thick line between poetry and prose in verse, doesn't make his poems and verses any less interesting. In fact, it adds to their character.

John Updike has accomplished a great deal in his career, but his poetry cuts to the heart of his obessions/teachings/observations on life. What a wonderful collection to behold. He makes one appreciate how poetry can once again speak to the heart as well as the mind. I highly recommend this excellent collection for poetry lovers and non-poetry lovers alike.

I recently established a fish tank with a few guppies and two of these adorable African Dwarf Frogs. The pet store was able to give us some advice on how to care for the tank and how many fish and frogs we could put in the size tank we purchased. The care sheets available in pet stores leaves a lot to be desired. Even the knowledge of the employees can vary quite a bit. I searched my local libraries and even the internet and was surprised at what a difficult time I had finding information about African Dwarf Frogs. This book really helped me understand these frogs, their behavior and feeding needs, etc. This book gave me the confidence to feel like a good caretaker for these frogs and gave me the opportunity to teach my two boys about the responsibility of caring for pets. Thank you again for this much needed book!

A quick read that covers all the important points of owning African Dwarf frogs. I learned everything I needed to know prior to purchase: habitat requirements (water temp, tank size, Ph ranges), dietary requirements, identify and treat common illnesses, and how to select healthy frogs.

Perfect Intro to MonoTouch Android for Transitioning C# Programmers

As a .Net C# programmer moving into the smartphone world, the Java/Eclipse toolchain has always felt like a step backward. Came monoTouch for Android and I'm finally back in business! The Xamarin team is top-notch and could probably teach MS a few tricks. Overall, being able to develop Android Apps in C# using Visual Studio is a winwin combination for me. Yes, the runtime adds to the binary footprint but for quick and/or small-volume apps, the framework is unrivaled in its stability and development environment. And a no-brainer for a .Net guy.

However, as with all fast moving technologies, the documentation, while decent, is a bit sketchy once you pass beyond your first "Hello World" app. The Xamarin site is good for reference but a little thin on in-depth examples. If you've got some Java Android experience, then it's not so much of an issue because you already know the SDK and typical Android recipes/patterns. But as a transitioning C# programmer, you'll spend hours figuring out basic stuff from starting/managing a background service, inter process communication, application preferences, onboard devices, etc...

"Professional Android Programming" will save you time and bring you up to speed on the Android way of doing things. Wanting to get a small app running asap, I devoured this book and learned a whole bunch over the weekend. Where I had previously spent hours figuring out persistent preferences, I was up and running in an hour after reading chap.7 on Application Preferences. Gotta love clear & concise examples!

If you're getting into Android programming via monoTouch, then do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book. It'll save you time and frustration. Happy coding.

Great book for newbies

This book is an excellence start for beginners. I tried to convert a java code example to a c# example. The example was to demo Touch Screen via a listener class. The MotionEvent:Action class apprears to be redesigned, and no usage examples were available. Most samples referenced by the Xanarin websites are for MonoTouch and not Mono for Android. The website documents are not complete, it usually gives the same info as the VS 2010 intelliscence. Which is very good and well supported.

In short, the book is only a good start... but most real world UIs requires advanced UI programming, which with book lacks.

Immature Technology - You Will be Coding in the Wild West

There are too numerous bugs and glitches to mention. Just a few - we could never get the emulator to come up. We read there were many problems with this, so we tried using SharpDevelop instead of Visual Studio - it worked. Surprise. So getting a "Hello World" app running seemed like an accomplishment. Next step - running with googlemaps in the background. This never worked. We eventually had to give up on the technology. The book is hopelessly out of date, including all the screen shots. And the final chapter that describes interoperability admits it's more theoretical than practical.

The BEST of the Bunch

I was asked to teach a voiceover acting class and came to Amazon to look for a good book. I bought three of the top rated ones on the topic. Luckily I read this one first -- which made it impossible to get very far reading the others. This is far and away the most well-written, informative, organized and thorough book on just about every aspect of the voiceover business. The authors write with a lot of humor, but also with a lot of information, presented in a step-by-step way that made pursuing a career in voiceovers sound not only do-able, but a lot of fun. They give brilliant advice on everything from keeping your voice healthy, to what the audition process is like, how to present yourself as a professional, to such minor but important details as "don't touch the mike - the engineer will do it." Hats off to these writers -- don't waste your time with the other books -- once you read this one they will look poorly written and full of bad information.

Worth a read. The authors clearly know what they're talking about, and the section on animation work is especially good. On the minus side, there's a lot of attempted humor here (not unusual for books on this topic, strangely). A lot of it falls flat, and what's it even doing here? Just give us the info! Worth reading, though. I can also recommend Word of Mouth, by Blu, Mullin, and Songe; VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voiceover Actor, by Harlan Hogan; You Should Do VOICEOVERS!, by Dave Webster; and Voiceovers, by Janet Wilcox.

"...Voice-Over Voice Actor is a truly fantastic book. The back cover says it is "the coolest book on voice-over out there" and while I haven't seen or read any others on this topic, the claim seems plausible...Lowenthal and Platt have given us something not only extremely informative, but it's written conversationally, which makes it something that is also charming and fun to read...I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in pursuing voice-over professionally and to people who are just generally interested in the field. I will also say, though, that a great many of the tips and suggestions that are offered in this book could reasonably be applied to the pursuit of ANY profession or endeavour, such as marketing yourself and maintaining a certain level of professionalism (even while having fun). So really, I'd recommend that everyone read this book."

Finally a much needed book for learning cross sectional anatomy that shows MRI imagining side by side with familiar Netter illustrations. The chapter for peritoneal spaces was key to understanding how the spaces communicate. What a great book for everyday clinical reference.
