Great guide and reference for solving complex data-based problems

Most of the books currently available on the topic of so called “analytics” or “data science” focus on a specific platform such as a book on R or a book on Python. This text take a different approach, one that is platform agnostic (although some examples are shown using SAS). Each chapter provides a concise discussion of techniques to model data with enough mathematical theory to explain where something like logistic regression is applicable, but not so much theory that you are left feeling like you are swimming in Greek-alphabet soup. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of mathematical proofs, however in my opinion only what is necessary has been presented. I found the discussions very readable and refreshingly clear. Where things get a little murky, there is always an excellent example to clarify things. There is also enough foundational probability and statistics so that you don’t need to pick up a second book for background information.

This book also differs from other books I have read/used, in that it also includes sections on AI and machine learning. Actually the text analytics chapters, which rely heavily on AI and machine learning are what drew me to this book in the first place. I don’t see many people sitting down and reading from cover to cover, but more as a reference and guide to specific techniques or approach. An excellent well researched and clearly written reference for anyone working in either a research environment or working with large data both structured and unstructured.

Excellent guide to the world of analytics

This book provides a rather comprehensive survey of tools and techniques of computational analytics in a business analytics context. The author presents the subject matter in a progressive pattern, so that it will be beneficial from an experienced to a novice researcher, who is ready to dive into a field that can be very overwhelming at first.

I admire Subrata's insight and feel for the subject, which is very well reflected in the overall organization of the book. Starting with an overview and preliminaries, he slowly builds a story by introducing Statistical, AI and ML analytical techniques, and also the trending unstructured data analytics. Furthermore, the traditional mathematically heavy books and papers could be daunting for someone first entering the field of analytics. This book handles this challenge in such a smooth fashion, via organization of chapters: chapters are logically grouped into 6 parts; each chapter introduces the material progressively with examples, figures, and derivations and concludes with a section on further reading, which is beneficial for someone to dive a little deeper into a particular area of interest. The overall organization is both fun and engaging.

I am writing this as an experienced researcher who actively works on both theoretical and application research in the broader area of signal processing and data fusion. I have read Subrata's book "High-level Data Fusion" (and related publications) as a graduate student, used it as a reference manual (along with David Hall's book on mathematical techniques in data fusion). Author has a natural talent in providing subject matter along with a broader view illustrating how everything is related (i.e., the big picture). I think this book will be invaluable to both practitioners and students of this very vast, and yet captivating field of computational analytics.

Great intro text

I chose this book as I am doing a Masters' program final project that relies on analyzing sentiment in large bodies and huge databases of unstructured text. I find the discussions to be quite clear (I do not come from an analytics background AT ALL) and the progression of the textbook to be as if I am taking a class in the subject and building upon each step. I will be using this textbook as my prime reference for my data analysis.

The chapters on AI and machine learning are especially intriguing. Although I cannot follow all of the mathematical formulas, I don't need to, because the explanations provide more than adequate information. This is a great book for people like me who need to make use of computational analytics but who don't have any experience with the subject.

In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients include computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions. This site provides documents and links on a variety of subjects of general interest to computer science students (and professionals). Dr. Lawrie Brown is a senior lecturer in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, at the Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA) in Canberra, Australia. His professional interests include cryptography, communications and computer systems security, and most recently, the design of safe mobile code environments using the functional language Erlang. He has previously worked on the design and implementation of private key block ciphers, in particular the LOKI family of encryption algorithms. Informative & Recent

This was a required buy for class, although I didn't particularly mind this book. Terminology especially was very well defined, and honestly reading the book was probably better than going to class. Not to say that you shouldn't attend lectures, I simply had a very boring professor that was hard to pay attention to. This book made it easier to learn the material by comparing it with the professors lecture slides. Also did practice problems from the book, some of which were sort of tedious, but I suppose that's how they make sure you really know the material.

I never tried to use any supplemental online material from the book. I believe it did come with an online key, but it was never used so I can't say anything about it either way. I purchased the hardcover version of the book, not a digital copy.

Lousy licensing policy for this book

The publisher places a limit of two licenses on this book. I typically look at books on my home and office desktop PCs and laptop, so when I go to consult the book I often find that I cannot access it until I delete it from somewhere else. Given the high cost of the book license it seems they could be more generous. It would cost them nothing.

Brilliant book, extremely good value, one of best ever purchases..

We bought this with Tom's sequel "Houses 2" and its one of my favourites of all time now. Primarily pictorial, with excellent quality photography and inclusion of designer's diagrams. Theres always something new to notice on each page and the surrounding landscapes on most pictures are worth admiring in their own right!
This and Houses 2 will be one of the few books we bring with us when we relocate internationally in the near future. Highly recommended to anyone interested in architecture, design, photography, landscapes or just an interesting book to leave out for guests.

Amazing craftsmanship and details illustrated

I first came across Tom Kundig's works in the monograph for Olson Sundberg Kindig Allen's monograph (Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects: Architecture, Art, and Craft) and was amazed then at the refined "human" touch of materials and finishes chosen for the projects.
This book focuses further on this aesthetic appeal by showcasing Tom Kundig's houses only. It shows some of the numerous sketches and drawings that Tom Kundig drew in order to convey his ideas to the client/contractor. The level of details depicted in the photography is also breathtaking as it reveals the intricate details of bespoke door handles, hinges, rollers that the architect custom designed. I only wish I knew how long and how much each of his projects must've costed his clients because this level of detail in any residence is very. very rare.
I highly recommend this book for anyone that is interested in modern houses that uses rustic materials in a refined composition~

Cordaella's Journey Begins

Cordaella Buchanan lost her mother when she was an infant. She was raised by her father, a Falconer. It was only the two of them on Ben Nevis. She loved her father who taught her so much, but her life changed in an instant. Her father was murdered and she is taken in by her Uncle. Can she exist in this house where she is a pawn? Her Uncle's only focus is money and power and she is only a tool for him to use. This is what life is for a woman. Cordaella is a powerful character. I like her intelligence and her understanding of the machinations of the Earl. How difficult it is for her to live in a household where she is not loved. I could understand her heartache and I felt her hurt. Liz Lyles created a character that I cared about. I felt a connection and wanted to be with Cordy on her life's journey. This first installment drew me in and kept me reading. I want to know where life and fate will take this strong woman. The Falconer's Daughter showed how powerful role fate plays in life and takes away our control.

Beautifully written and compelling

The Falconer's Daughter Book One is compelling reading as it tells the story of Cordaella Buchanan.
Set in the Middle Ages,the book begins in a simple cottage on Ben Nevis in Scotland before moving to the lush countryside of Derbyshire. There are contrasts aplenty. Life on Ben Nevis is harsh yet while she lives there Cordy is loved and cherished. In her uncle's castle near Buxton there is material wealth but love is thin on the ground.
Liz Lyles writes beautifully and has created a plot which kept me reading late into the night. I am now heading straight fro Book Two to continue this wonderful story and I can't wait!

An intriguing tale of a young girl who loses everything she has known and is forced into a new life.

Cordaella Buchanan didn't know any other life than one of she had. Raised by her father, they didn't have much. Her father worked hard so they could survive until the day he was murdered.

After her father’s death, Cordaella is forced to leave her Highland home and taken to England to live with an uncle and his family. She didn't know any of them. She was taught many things including how to be a proper lady. She also learns she is the heir to a large fortune. Because of her inheritance, she is prepped for marriage where everyone has something to gain except for Cordaella

When Cordaella overhears conversation between her uncle and a peasant the truth comes out about her father’s death. How will Cordelia handle this? Revenge is the first thing that comes to mind.

This is a very interesting story. I was hooked right away. I'm ready to read the next book now.

Grade 4 Up–In the late 1980s, DC Comics revamped many superheroes but realized that Batman should remain true to his 1939 history. According to the introduction, the editors also decided that the public needed to know more about Batman's early life as a vigilante, and Miller and Mazzucchelli came together to produce Batman: Year One. Originally released in 1988 in four parts, the stories have been combined into one book. Opening with the arrival of Lieutenant James Gordon in Gotham's police force, the story goes on to inform readers about the level of corruption permeating the force. They also witness Bruce Wayne's first encounter with the prostitute named Selina, who will become Catwoman. Wayne speaks to his dead father, asking for guidance, and is answered with a bat on the windowsill, and Batman is born. The remaining chapters highlight Gordon's continuing difficulties with the corrupt police force, Batman's early difficulties in protecting and using his arsenal of weapons, and the first villains he chooses to pursue. At the end of the book, readers are treated to some background on Mazzucchelli's art, the production of Year One, and details on Richmond Lewis's coloring techniques. Year One effectively justifies Batman with a story about Gordan

The year 1986 saw the rise of two of superherodom’s most critically acclaimed graphic novels: Alan Moore’s Watchmen and Frank Miller’s dystopian Dark Knight Returns. After Miller’s success with DKR, a stark depiction of Batman’s future, DC Comics charged Miller with a revamping of Batman’s origin in 1987, 48 years after Bob Kane and Bill Finger’s original take on the character. In his Introduction to the reboot, Dennis O’Neil, one of Batman’s premier writers in the 70’s, said that the retelling of the origin story was not about changing the story, but about modernizing and improving it: “It could be given depth, complexity, a wider context. Details could be added to give it focus and credibility” (O’Neil, 1). That was a heavy order for a medium considered childish fantasy, so did 'Year One' deliver?

In short - yup. Successfully meeting all of O’Neil’s criteria, Miller’s Batman: Year One, beautifully illustrated by David Mazzucchelli and colored by Richmond Lewis, has become the definitive Batman origin story. Not simply an explanation of how a man can dress up like a bat and effectively combat rampant crime, though such elements are included, Year One is more about making plausible WHY a man would need to dress up like a bat and fight crime, and how Gotham City would respond.

Like Watchmen and DKR before it, Year One ascends from children’s entertainment to something closer to literature. Though relatively brief, the story is complex (watch Gotham's #1 cop still come up short, justifying the extreme measures of Batman) and dramatic (two characters who endure trauma to ultimately adapt their problem solving strategies while maintaining moral rigor); if it did not make the story of Batman realistic, it made it mature and believable. This book is a must-read for all Batman or superhero fans and a great read for anyone at least marginally interested in the genre.

Perfect book for new readers -- to Batman, or to comics in general!

This collection is a great introduction not just to the character of Batman, but comic books in general. If you are a brand-new reader, and you're looking for either your first Batman book or your first book overall, this is an excellent choice. 'Batman: Year One' is the origin story as you already know it -- Bruce Wayne's parents are killed when he's a young boy, he leaves Gotham for a while and comes back ready to fight crime.

Frank Miller's telling of this tale shines in several lights. He's known for drawn-out character monologues, so you get plenty of frames with Batman or Bruce Wayne thinking to himself. This gives a great insight into the psychology of Batman and Wayne, who almost start to cement themselves as semi-individual characters -- you'll definitely pick up on this if you progress from here into other recommended reading such as 'The Man Who Laughs,' 'The Long Halloween,' 'Dark Victory' and more. The psychology behind Batman's early actions reveal a hero who isn't sure of himself, a detective whose prime mission is to investigate why he wants to be the Batman and what that really means.

We also get fully roped into Jim Gordon's world very early on. Gordon actually leads the story off, and we spend almost as much time with him as we do with Batman. He's new to Gotham, like Batman, and he's trying to make a name for himself within the crooked Gotham City Police Department. You'll read the very beginnings of Gordan's relationship with Batman, which obviously lays the groundwork for much more collaboration between the two characters.

I will note that I purchased the soft-cover trade paperback version of this book, with the red and black cover. The pages are glossy but not annoyingly so; if you're looking for the newspaper-type of print, you likely won't find that in any new printing anyway.

Art-wise, 'Year One' shows a very gritty and seedy Gotham, and Batman spends a lot of his time investigating the worst parts of town (where we're introduced to an early Catwoman too). The colors are dark and subtle, but it all works within Miller's moody writing; put it all together and you have a book that, like I wrote earlier, is simply perfect for new readers.

I'd highly recommend this as a gift as well, for anyone who hasn't read Batman's origin story in the comics. If you're a fan of the Christopher Nolan trilogy, definitely pick this up. I would tangentially recommend purchasing 'The Man Who Laughs' to get an early look at The Joker, then moving from there into 'The Long Halloween' and 'Dark Victory,' which have some more associated reading with them. These books will provide a well-rounded and extremely enjoyable look into the beginnings of Batman's career.

One of the best ways into modern Batman comics.

Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and this make up two of the most important story arcs and settings of tone for Batman. Both the Burton and Nolan run of films seem to have some tonal relationship to Miller's work on Batman. "Batman: Year One" goes back to the origins of Batman, without significantly changing those origins, but with Gotham City being more gritty and corrupt than before. Using Gordon as a primary protagonist in addition to Bruce Wayne, one gets a sense of the desperation of the Gotham.

While it is not as bleak as Dark Knight Returns, Year One does develop the noir elements of Batman and builds up his relationship in this noir context, Mazzucchelli's work is workman-like but furthers the genre feel of the book and conveys both emotions and grit. Wayne is shown as weaker and Gordon as more corruptible, but both develop into their current identities in this comic. One of the best ways into modern Batman comics.
