Fabulous read

Reid has created a hero worth falling in love with and a heroine who is his perfect complement. Shaan is left at the altar by her handsome groom, Piers, who marries another woman. Piers' brooding brother, Rafe, steps in and convinces the devastated bride to marry him instead. Shaan is determined not to see the truth---that Rafe loves her deeply---because she is in a distraught haze over Piers' desertion and over her belief that Rafe is really in love with the woman Piers has married. Rafe uses whatever means necessary---bullying, coddling, spoiling---to restore Shaan's self-esteem and force her out of her despondency. The newspapers add to Shaan's unhappiness by reporting that the wealthy brothers have switched brides, which, coupled with other twists and turns, leads to a final confrontation involving the three major characters. Why did Piers leave? Does he love Shaan? Does Shaan love Rafe or will her heart forever belong to Piers? What is the relationship between Piers' wife and Rafe? What really caused all of these problems to begin with? This book keeps you turning page after page to discover the answers. The plot is delicious, the characters are very well-drawn and the book is incredibly satisfying. I dispose of most Harlequin books right after I read them. This one is a keeper. Buy it!

Strong writing, weak characters - 3.5 stars if I could

Pros:
- The writer is very skillful, and brings the locations (Hong Kong in particular) brilliantly to life and kept me invested enough in the story of two really damaged people to finish the book.
- The best friend character, who is the only sane person in the book, was fun to have around, if only as a novelty. For some reason in this kind of Harlequin novel (older Mediterranean man meets meek, mild virgin) there are almost never any decent parents, siblings or friends around- they tend to be populated by horrible people (my suspicion is that with a solid 60% of the genre having one person with a lick of sense around would make it impossible for the stories to happen as written).
- The setting was really dramatic and intense. I genuinely wanted to know what would happen next- all credit is given to the writer for ensuring that.

Cons:
- The hero's actions are absolutely ridiculous. Him loving her from the beginning is sweet enough (I guess), but bullying a severely traumatized 22-year old into marriage is really heartless, no matter what the circumstances. I think that the setting merited a longer book, one which would have fully fleshed out the consequences of his actions instead of moving directly into the HEA (a la Susan Mallery- she does a GREAT job writing heroes who have to redeem themselves).
- I have to agree with another reviewer, the heroine really is spineless. I know she's traumatized, but to let the brother of the man who you feel ruined and defiled you take your life over makes absolutely no sense. At all. She has no ambitions and is totally content to let pretty much everyone else in the book run her life. She's pretty, but not particularly smart, savvy or in possession of large amounts of common sense. Total doormat.

I enjoyed reading this book, and even re-read it when I was done, so I could see if the ending stood up. It did. Unfortunately the hero and heroine just aren't really up to par- there is no way to cure the massive case of plot-convenient stupidity that the book rests on to keep moving. I'd recommend it if you love this author particularly, but otherwise you are ok taking a pass on this.

Gripping saga

The very first pages of this novel are emotionally gripping. The heroine is in shock at first and it takes some effort for the chivalrous brother of the absent groom to get some response. The storyline is interesting and well-thought out. Michelle Reid gives her characters very intense and identifiable emotions. I enjoyed this book very much.

Hemingway would like this book

E. B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed" is by common consent one of the finest -- if not the finest -- account of the life of a combat infantryman in World War II. At Pelieu and Okinawa, Sledge was one of only 10 men in his Marine company of 240 to escape being wounded or killed. "China Marine" is the follow-up to "With the Old Breed," a lesser work but one that tells of what happened to Sledge after the war.

With Sledge's experience, one would have thought that he would have been among the first among the military to be demobilized after the end of the war with Japan -- but no, he and his colleagues were sent to China to disarm the Japanese soldiers there and to maintain order in several northern Chinese cities. This is Sledge's account of the six months he spent in China. His view is that of a Private First Class -- but an educated and sophisticated PFC, the son of a medical doctor from Mobile, Alabama, and an outstanding writer. He delighted in Peking, fresh food, a clean bunk, light duties, and friendship with the sophisticated Soong family -- but the danger from attack by communist armies was always there.

Sledge goes on to tell of the trauma of his discharge from the Marines and homecoming to Mobile and, briefly, his long years of struggle with what we call today Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's a small book, only 160 pages, and an interesting, beautifully written, account of the decompression of a combat soldier and his return home.

Sledge died in 2001 but he was often quoted in Ken Burn's recent PBS series on World War II. Sledge is a true American hero.

China Marine: An Infantryman's Life After World War II is the powerful World War II memoir of E. B. Sledge and the sequel to his "With The Old Breed: At Peleliu And Okinawa". Sledge is a veteran of the physical and psychological scars of war, and this former Marine narrates the end of the old China and the rise of the Communist state through the eyes of someone who was there and saw it all. Sledge also presents the troubles of having to adapt to civilian life when the era of combat had faded. A moving true story of balancing life with the immense demands of nobly serving one's country, China Marine is a welcome and recommended contribution to the growing library of World War II era biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs.

The Title Says It All....Another Outstanding Book by Gene Sledge

China Marine Gene Sledge is an old friend although I've never met him. Any book by him is more than worth the few dollars it would take to own it. Most Americans have no knowledge of the fact that immediately following WW II 60,000 U. S. Marines were sent into North China. Their real purpose was to keep that area from falling into the hands of Mao Tse Tsung's 8th Route Army when the Japanese withdrew. We Marines were to fill the gap, and then turn this critical ground that contained much of the coal available in China. The Russians raised hell in the UN about the US not repatriating the Jap troops to their mainland. The US objective was to maintain them in place as additional insurance in order to keep Mao's ChiComs in Manchuria the caves of Yemen where they had been kept in check by the Japs during WW II. With pressure from the UN, the last of the Japs and Koreans were sent home by about June of 1946, leaving a dwindling number of Marines to literally "hold the fort." Essentially, this is what Sledge writes about. Imagine to have survived the battles for Peleliu and Okinawa only to be sent to North China where too many Marines were to be killed. Sledge, because of his time overseas, was able to leave China early in '46, as I recall. Those of us who had arrived late to the Pacific Theater during WW II would remain guarding the railroads and bridges that moved the coal. And so, you say: "How come I haven't read anything about this? It was not mentioned in my History classes in high school or college."

In my case I ended up in Tsingtao on the Shantung Peninsula, until 25Sep48 when I was commissioned a 2dLt and ordered stateside. Within a few months of my leaving China Chiang Kai Shek and his Kuomingtao withdrew to Formosa (Taiwan). My old regiment, the 5th Marines, oversaw the withdrawal of US and other civilians from Shanghai in early '49, and China was from that time under the control of Mao and the Chicoms. I and many other Marines saw a great deal of the latter when they intervened in the Korean War in November/December '50. We Marines were in and around the Chosin Reservoir. The US public knows little of the Korean War, but most at least connect the term Chosin Reservoir to that conflict.

"Show, Don't Tell", but how to show ?

We know by now the "Show, Don't Tell" idiom professed by almost every how-to book on writing fiction. Where we stumble is in the `showing' of emotions, especially showing the same emotion in varying degrees of intensity, and often end-up writing clich�s. The Emotion Thesaurus breaks new ground by providing alternatives to body language cues, thoughts and visceral reactions. Unlike a word thesaurus that we open at a specific page to find alternatives for a word, this book can be read in its entirety not just to derive inspiration, but also to improve your storehouse of `emotion descriptions'. But if all this information is available free on the web, why buy the book? I bought it because I prefer to shut down my internet connection while I write and edit, to prevent distractions and the book comes in handy. Also for those times late in the night when I'd rather reach for this book than boot up the laptop and fire up the modem.

Time-saving Tool for the New or Experienced, 4.5 Stars

*Note (7/13/12): I located the linked navigation a while back, and it's actually very well done. Excellent. Forgot to update the review.

I'm rounding up because my only complaint is that I couldn't find a linked list/index to go from one entry to the next, back, or otherwise. I am going to search around the book to see if it does indeed exist and to see if it merely escaped me on my first pass. I'll knock off half a star for that, but I'm going to round up because this truly is a wonderful writing aid. (I'll amend my review if I locate it or if someone points it out.)

A wide variety of emotions are given in this book, each of the entries supplying information on the overall effects each emotional state has on people, from what others might notice or see to what a person might feel inside. Thus, it's a wonderful tool for examples in any point of view and wonderfully supports the modern, accepted style: third person limited. However, this tool could just as easily be used for any style or point of view.

In my opinion, this guide could be useful to both new and experienced writers of fiction. For the former, this is an amazing resource for learning how to write convincing characters and see how emotions translate into writing (then, hopefully, provoking sympathy, empathy, or whatever feeling you wish to evoke in the reader). For the latter, I would say that this can easily be a go-to reference for experienced writers to shake things up a bit and to avoid the long hours of research it would require to do the legwork already done in this guide. I've loaded this book onto my Kindle, and it's ready to go, along with my thesaurus, dictionary, and other reference material. This is one book that will be permanently loaded onto my device.

Graham C. Boettcher is the William Cary Hulsey Curator of American Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art, where he oversees the collections of American fine and decorative art before 1945. Beautiful book

As a collector of antique eye miniatures, I was so excited to finally have a reference book on them! The book is stunning and as informative as one might hope for such rare pieces of artwork. I don't really get why the chapter on fictional stories about specific pieces was added, other than to give non-antique collectors some historical perspective around lives during the relevant time period, but other than that one chapter, I really love the book and will use it in the future as a reference. I only wish I could get to the museum to see the exhibit which this book catalogs. This is a must have for collectors of eye miniatures, portrait miniatures and portrait jewelry of late 18th through the early 19th century.

I have been fascinated by the lovers' eye brooches ever since I learned about them. I'd love to have the means neccessary to collect them. They are so rare that I don't even have one. So instead I look at the beautiful pictures of this one collection of many often spectacular examples of this interesting and exotic jewelry. This book contains photos of this one extensive collection which features examples of all forms of this type of jewelry. I judged this book the way I judge all books on collections by the number and quality of the photos. This book contains many gorgeous and clear photos cataloguing this one collection of lovers' eye jewelry.
