A good, quick intro to Verilog

I needed a quick intro to Verilog because I was making a simple demo circuit for a customer using a low-end FPGA and I needed to learn how to program it. (I am a consultant in the semiconductor field). I purchased "Verilog for Digital Design" because it seemed like it best matched my requirements, and it was by far the cheapest option on Amazon. I found it easy to read and gave me just the right amount of information. Anyone who knows some basic boolean logic should find this book accessible. I also looked at some free verilog tutorials online but I found this guide to be the most helpful.

Great intro

This brief intro presents everything a budding logic designer needs to get started in Verilog. It covers all the core language features needed for a first project - the basics that will also be used again and again in more complex designs.

The reader should already know basic logic design: mapping problems to logic implementations, design of state machines, even a little processor architecture. This isn's a logic design book, it's a language book. As such, it won't stand alone as a text for a logic design class. For its purpose, though, it's a good one. I'm recommending this one, as a supplementary text, for my own class.

Straight, simple, Verilog

This is a solid reference to the Verilog HDL and explains the language without completely detaching itself from the meaning of digital design. This is no a digital design book (or at least a strongly guided one) and if you do not understand the basic architecture and organization of a computer, this will probably not help. If you just need to learn Verilog to implement that knowledge, this is helpful, straightforward, and concise. Misguided expectations are usually the single most common reason for poor reviews.

I recommend this for a hobbyist getting started with FPGAs or a decent reference to keep on the desk if you don't use Verilog often enough to use it reflexively. As mentioned, a working knowledge of logic, organization, and architecture are pretty necessary to do anything with this book without a companion textbook, but being an expert is not necessary.

The compiler is the linchpin of the programmer's toolbox. Working programmers use compilers every day and count heavily on their correctness and reliability. A compiler must accept the standard definition of the programming language so that source code will be portable across platforms. A compiler must generate efficient object code. Perhaps more important, a compiler must generate correct object code; an application is only as reliable as the compiler that compiled it.

A compiler is itself a large and complex application that is worthy of study in its own right. This book tours most of the implementation of lcc, a compiler for the ANSI C programming language. It is to compiling what Software Tools by B.W. Kernighan and P.J. Plauger (Addison-Wesley, 1976) is to text processing like text editors and macro processors. Software design and implementation are best learned through experience with real tools. This book explains in detail and shows most of the code for a real compiler. The accompanying diskette holds the source code for the complete compiler.

lcc is a production compiler. It's been used to compile production programs since 1988 and is now used by hundreds of C programmers daily. Detailing most of a production compiler in a book leaves little room for supporting material, so we present only the theory needed for the implementation at hand and leave the broad survey of compiling techniques to existing texts. The book omits a few language features--those with mundane or repetitive implementations and those deliberately treated only in the exercises--but the full compiler is available on the diskette, and the book makes it understandable.

The obvious use for this book is to learn more about compiler construction. But only few programmers need to know how to design and implement compilers. Most work on applications and other aspects of systems programming. There are four reasons why this majority of C programmers may benefit from this book.

First, programmers who understand how a C compiler works are often better programmers in general and better C programmers in particular. The compiler writer must understand even the darkest corners of the C language; touring the implementation of those corners reveals much about the language itself and its efficient realization on modern computers.

Second, most texts on programming must necessarily use small examples, which often demonstrate techniques simply and elegantly. Most programmers, however, work on large programs that have evolved--or degenerated--over time. There are few well documented examples of this kind of "programming in the large" that can serve as reference examples. lcc isn't perfect, but this book documents both its good and bad points in detail and thus provides one such reference point.

Third, a compiler is one of the best demonstrations in computer science of the interaction between theory and practice. lcc displays both the places where this interaction is smooth and the results are elegant, as well as where practical demands strain the theory, which shows in the resulting code. Exploring these interactions in a real program helps programmers understand when, where, and how to apply different techniques. lcc also illustrates numerous C programming techniques.

Fourth, this book is an example of a "literate program." Like TEX: The Program by D.E. Knuth (Addison-Wesley, 1986), this book is lcc's source code and the prose that describes it. The code is presented in the order that best suits understanding, not in the order dictated by the C programming language. The source code that appears on the diskette is extracted automatically from the book's text files.

This book is well suited for self-study by both academics and professionals. The book and its diskette offer complete documented source code for lcc, so they may interest practitioners who wish to experiment with compilation or those working in application areas that use or implement language-based tools and techniques, such as user interfaces.

The book shows a large software system, warts and all. It could thus be the subject of a postmortem in a software engineering course, for example.

For compiler courses, this book complements traditional compiler texts. It shows one way of implementing a C compiler, while traditional texts survey algorithms for solving the broad range of problems encountered in compiling. Limited space prevents such texts from including more than a toy compiler. Code generation is often treated at a particularly high level to avoid tying the book to a specific computer.

As a result many instructors prepare a substantial programming project to give their students some practical experience. These instructors usually must write these compilers from scratch; students duplicate large portions and have to use the rest with only limited documentation. The situation is trying for both students and instructors, and unsatisfying to boot, because the compilers are still toys. By documenting most of a real compiler and providing the source code, this book offers an alternative.

This book presents full code generators for the MIPS R3000, SPARC, and Intel 386 and successor architectures. It exploits recent research that produces code generators from compact specifications. These methods allow us to present complete code generators for several machines, which no other book does. Presenting several code generators avoids tying the book to a single machine, and helps students appreciate engineering retargetable software.

Assignments can add language features, optimizations, and targets. When used with a traditional survey text, assignments could also replace existing modules with those using alternate algorithms. Such assignments come closer to the actual practice of compiler engineering than assignments that implement most of a toy compiler, where too much time goes to low-level infrastructure and accommodating repetitive language features. Many of the exercises pose just these kinds of engineering problems.

lcc has also been adapted for purposes other than conventional compilation. For example, it's been used for building a C browser and for generating remote-procedure-call stubs from declarations. It could also be used to experiment with language extensions, proposed computer architectures and code-generator technologies.

We assume readers are fluent in C and assembly language for some computer, know what a compiler is and have a general understanding of what one does, and have a working understanding of data structures and algorithms at the level covered in typical undergraduate courses; the material covered by Algorithms in C by R. Sedgewick (Addison-Wesley, 1990), for example, is more than sufficient for understanding lcc.

About the Author

Since 1975, Christopher W. Fraser has researched compiling, particularly producing code generators automatically from compact specs, and has published many technical articles in this area. He originated retargetable peephole optimization, which GCC, a popular C compiler, uses to help select instructions. From 1977 until 1986, Fraser taught computer science, including compiling, at the University of Arizona. Since 1986, Fraser has conducted computing research at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey.

David R. Hanson is a Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University with more than 20 years of research experience in programming languages. This book contains literally all the code that you just concatenate together and get a full, working LCC compiler which I think is pretty cool. It's also the best form of commenting your code :v

Book is great for beginners

Book is great for beginners, except for the first chapters. The book is overwhelming at first and takes reviewing at later points of the book to understand why programmers need to do some things in Java. Otherwise it's a great book for beginners.

Book's physical quality is great as well.

Kathrin Fahlenbrach is Professor of Media Studies at the University of Hamburg, Germany. She is the author of Audiovisual Metaphors: Embodied and Affective Aesthetics of Film and Television (2010) and co-editor of Media and Revolt: Strategies and Performances from the 1960s to the Present (2014).

Martin Klimke is Associate Professor at New York University Abu Dhabi. He is the author of The Other Alliance: Global Protest and Student Unrest in West Germany and the US, 1962–1972 (2010) and co-author of A Breath of Freedom: The Civil Rights Struggle, African‐American GIs, and Germany (2010).

Joachim Scharloth is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Technische Universit�t Dresden. About the Author
March is co-founder of Aquarius Workshops, Inc. and Aspects magazine. She lead a busy life of counseling, teaching, lecturing, and writing.

Born and raised in Chicago where she majored inart and worked as a model and illustrator for an art studio, she moved to the Los Angeles area in 1948 and continued her professional career in the sales field. This is where she met her husband Dean and raised their children.

Self-taught, Joan began her serious study of astrology in 1965 and in 1969 studied with Ruth Hale Oliver. About this time she started to counsel and teach astrology. She has since achieved an international reputation as a teacher and lecturer, speaking for many groups in the U.S. and Canada. An AFAN coordinator and mamber of NCGR, her articles have been published in several national and international astrological magazines.

Overall Useful and Helpful But Too Brief

Learning about oneself and others is usually the basic reason most people choose to learn astrology. Consequently, we can say that next to Natal Astrology, Relationship Astrology is one of the most popular branches of astrology. I would, therefore, expect a thorough and more thought provoking exploration of the topic by these two seasoned authors. Unfortunately, this is the one volume in their series that I am not that crazy about, even though it contains some very useful information and I am glad it's a part of my library.

The book essentially begins with a look of the first house and seventh house dynamics in relationships. The first house representing you and your persona, and the seventh house representing what you seek in others. The book covers Aries through Pisces Rising, with their matching seventh houses containing Libra through Virgo Rising. Each overlay is given a brief explanation of traits and more focus is given to examples of people who have those house positions.

For instance, for Aries Rising, the authors comment on Princess Margaret's and Queen Elizabeth II's first house dynamics. But when discussing the seventh house, they change focus and use Barbara Streisand to explain their insights. None of the overlays are given too much thought and this is the first text where their brief writing style is too brief. A more valuable approach would have been to discuss Princess Margaret's and Queen Elizabeth II's first house and how their seventh house needs worked with their first house persona and needs. Essentially, greater depth should have been given to the examples chosen rather than numerous examples to explain their brief synopses

While this text contains a few good insights, and covers a broad range of topics, the coverage is very sparse in some areas and leaves me hungry to learn more and feeling annoyingly underfed on the information for the topics discussed. In fact, I think this book better serves you if you have some knowledge on relationship analysis and just need a few good burst of insights to add to it.

Core topics are divided as follows: House Positions: 1st and 7th; Chart comparison; The Composite Chart; and Putting it all Together (case studies). The authors are very good at chart analysis and their synopsis of the Princess Diana and Prince Charles relationship is pretty good. The authors also compare their charts to each other. As always, the greatest strength of this book series is the wide range of topics that are presented and applied to numerous chart examples. However, brevity didn't do justice to this text and a little more expansion of their topics would have made this book an overall better read. In general, I recommend this book and I do like it, but it might be frustrating to a novice who doesn't have much knowledge on synastry and composite charts and wishes to learn the ins and out of how to compare two charts or how to look to their own natal chart for insights on relationship needs and dynamics.

Good book!

The Only Way to Learn About Relationships

It's widely known that Marion D. March and Joan McEvers were both two "nuts-and-bolts" astrologers. They liked to explain concepts and ideas in the most simple way, so that pupils, astrologers or readers (as myself) can understand and find their own way to practise. This book is, again, an application of this concept of simplicity. You will not find there hard explanations, but simple ideas that mark you a way and you decide if you take it or not (or gon by the middle way).

This book provides an astrological answer to an universal question: "Is he/she good for me?". Of course you have to master the previous books; but if you do, this book is a good start point to "play with two charts" from different people. Till now you have watched charts from one person: progressions, solar o lunar revolutions and its relationships with natal chart. Now it's time to see how two destinies become interleaved. I guess if you enjoyed the previous books, this book will continue the fun.

She is executive producer of more than 20 television documentaries, many of which have won awards and have been broadcast in many countries. She is also a Research Affiliate in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Yale University. Her background in medical, scientific, environmental and other areas provides her with an appreciation of the interconnectedness of many subjects.

Great Resource

This book is an excellent compilation of papers by authoritative authors on crucial environmental issues today. As the author of one chapter, I may be a bit biased, but I can say without equivocation that the authors of the other chapters have written excellent summaries of the environmental issues they address. Janine Selendy, editor of this volume, has done a masterful job of planning this volume and putting it together. Congratulations to her on a job well-done. This is a valuable book for anyone wishing to obtain an overview of today's environmental issues.

Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor have a combined twenty years of practical experience transforming cultures at iconic institutions. Previously, Neel Doshi was a Partner at McKinsey & Company, founding member of a tech startup, and uninspired employee of several mega-institutions.

Lindsay McGregor led projects at McKinsey & Company with Fortune 500 companies as well as school systems and nonprofits.

Good, but I was hoping for a little more.

A good book that at the very least adds incrementally to the literature. Definitely worth reading. The ToMo survey instrument seems fairly well developed and probably useful, as is the 6-dimensional ToMo motivational model. A downside for me is that the book is written in the business genre, with lots of case study type examples. Unfortunately, case study examples may be of dubious value, other than perhaps to motivate enthusiasm in readers. (Lots of business books that make extensive use of case study examples contain claims that have proven to be very wrong over time, so the studies don't prove much.) The book gets better as it progresses, broadly peaking towards the end in Part IV. A good deal of attention is paid to Fundamental Attribution Error (appropriately so, but I would have liked to have seen a bit more complex model such as is used in Attribution Style). Other important cognitive bias issues are inadequately covered (I would suggest Daniel Kahneman's, Thinking Fast and Slow, for an excellent background on that subject). Free riders are discussed a little, but more detail about that issue can be found in Jonathan Haidt's, The Righteous Mind. The tribe, band, hunting party, clique breakdown of groups was new to me, and very thought provoking. Also useful was the frequently overlooked observation that people in many jobs are so busy with tactical work, they have no time available for adaptive development. The Fire Watcher idea is good, but certainly not foolproof. I would also say some of what is covered in this book about adaptive work culture seems closely related to what is known from the Positive Psychology movement. It has been observed by various researchers that there is a tipping point in positivity when the ratio of positive to negative reinforcers is somewhere between 4:1 and 6:1. Above that people can get so positive they may get a little too out of touch with reality and insufficiently risk averse for their own good. Still, perhaps to arrive at a stable adaptive culture it might be necessary to maintain people somewhere above the minimum positivity tipping point, but I don't know if anybody has studied the issue in a business context. Sadly, the book doesn't go into any of that, but maybe the authors' next book will have some more to add.

Very repetitive and slow-paced

There are several good points made in this book. But, I feel as though the authors beat them to death. Over and over and over again with the same point.
If you're new to managing people, or if you're looking for ideas on how to structure, reward, or motivate your team, this is a pretty good book of things to keep in mind. So long as you can get past the repetitiveness.

No ToMo? Read this book!

I read Primed to Perform because I've always viewed company culture as a critical and underutilized tool for unlocking success on many levels. Having worked at many different companies as a consultant, and having also done a stint at one of the companies profiled in the book, I was curious to see what the fuss was about. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, Primed to Perform really brought my understanding of culture to a whole new level - it creates a comprehensive vocabulary and structure around ideas that I think many people (myself included) have intuited on some level, but haven't fleshed out fully.

Doshi and McGregor explain that we can't go looking for "good culture" in foosball tables or free catered lunches (though I'm not one to say no to those either!). Instead, the foundation of good culture exists in the way companies tap into employees' total motivation, or ToMo. ToMo itself is made up of six sources of motivation. The three direct ("good") motives are (1) play, (2) purpose, and (3) potential. The three indirect ("not-so-good") motives are (4) emotional pressure, (5) economic pressure, and (6) inertia. Each motive is explained in detail with relevant and entertaining examples. However, the most fascinating part for me was the data presented. For all you data nerds out there (represent!), company culture may have always seemed firmly planted in the realm of fluffiness. However, Doshi and McGregor present an extensive amount of analysis of ToMo scores for various companies and industries to illustrate that, in fact, companies we think of as having "that secret sauce" when it comes to culture - Apple, Whole Foods, Southwest - consistently have demonstrably higher ToMo scores than their peers.

But, a metric isn't very useful unless you can act on it, and Doshi and McGregor spend a significant portion of Primed to Perform helping readers understand how to apply the principles of ToMo to their own companies in a very tangible way. I'm really hoping this book gains a lot of steam, because I would love to see a world in which companies invest as many resources in culture as they do in any other function, finally understanding that it can have a significant impact on the bottom line too.

In addition to all of the great content, I also wanted to mention that the book itself is an entertaining read. The authors have clearly spent a lot of time collecting relevant and interesting anecdotes, and there are no shortage of examples to support each point they make. I look forward to participating in the broader discussion that I'm sure this book will spark!
