Read Lupin's awesome adventures!!

It's really a pity (almost a shame) that Amazon.com doesen't have a complete list of Leblanc's work. Anyway, if you're intersted, in Brazil contact Editora Nova Fronteira. I really don't know if they are still publishing the books, but you should try. Leblanc's hero and at the same time, villain, is Ars�ne Lupin, a frenchman talented for arts, literature, wining young ladies' hearts, and, oddly, robbery. He is the portrait of the frenchman, hilarious, independent, clever, and human. Leblanc hit the bull's eye creating this kind of character to go against the other mistery characters of his time, like Agatha Christie's Poirot, or Father Brown, or Inspetor Maigret and, most of all, the All-Time Brittanic Sherlock Holmes. As a matter of fact, there is a book called "Ars�ne Lupin meets Herlock Sholmes", figure out why! "Crystal Stopper" is one of the three Leblanc's books one must read, it's the first one. The other two are called "The hollow Needle" and "813". In these books, Lupin is involved with treasures, has to decipher complicated plots, has to save his life and lives of people he cares about. The most funny chapters are the ones he has to deal with the french police force. He even disguises himself as a well-known and respected inspector for years, and no one is able to discover him. If you're sick and tired of Miss Jane Marple and such characters, take your time and find Leblanc's books. Another good guess is "The teeth of the tiger", showing an older and tired, yet very alive, Ars�ne Lupin.

This Kindle Version Is Missing Paragraphs of Texts

Crystal Stopper is one of the most entertaining Arsene Lupin adventures. Lupin is put on the defensive from the opening and has to fight his way out of the hole in which he finds himself. I highly recommend the book and prefer it to other versions where Lupin basically plays the superman.

This particular Kindle version, however, is problematic. It is missing entire paragraphs from the book. Specifically, any time the original book paraphrases a letter or newspaper article, this version simply omits it. So frequently you get texts like the following (directly quoted):

Among the late news he found the following pargraphs:

In between other newspapers and prospectuses lay a letter. Lupin jumped when he say it. It was addressed:

"Oh," he gasped, "a letter from Gilbert!" It contained these few words:

Once again, Lupin spent a night alternating between sleeplessness and nightmares.

This is extremely frustrating and takes away a great deal from book. Again, I highly recommend the book but there must be a better e-version of the book than this one.

Besides this book I have also read :"IN PURSUIT OF ARSENE LUPIN" ,"ARSENE LUPIN vs HERLOCK SHOLMES","EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ARSENE LUPIN" in the early '90's translated into greek. I was totally taken by the portrail of the character and by how well-written the book was!!! I've managed to convince my husband to read :"The Extraordinary Adventures... " (the only title we could get from the library) and he absolutely loved it!We have decided to buy all the titles we could find because they are worth having. All lovers of SHERLOCK HOLMES should give Arsene Lupin a try!

One of a kind for the level of detail

This magnificent 1,000 page 5th edition of a timeless classic on manufacturing is as much a practical handbook as it is a text. Each page is PACKED with useful formulas, examples, pictures and diagrams solving practical HOW TO problems in manufacturing, from materials science to casting, molding, sintering, welding and much more, including metals, plastics, glass, integrated circuits and far more. There are supposedly only 63 "formal" problems in the whole text, but needless to say the examples themselves, on nearly every page, give practical solutions, rules of thumb, shortcuts and even rigorous formulas where required (although few proofs or derivations, as this is more on the practical side, which is perfect for an applied audience but not if you're teaching theory and proofs of the equations). Some economics are covered, but not a lot, and not in depth, as other texts focus on that aspect as specialties.

I also use this to teach online classes, and although the text is usually $200, many sellers are importing the "international" edition (read: India for $30 new instead of $200) which IS the edition that is reviewed here. If you have a problem with these kinds of imports you might want to pass, but from a content viewpoint it is identical to the $200 edition, the binding is sound, and although the pages are thin and black and white, they are odor free and sturdy enough for handbook use. If you've gotten SI editions before, you know why I mention these parameters. Of course India uses SI units, but that is not as big an issue here since the math is universal.

Highly recommended regardless of which format you choose. Much of the material in this text is becoming a "lost art" in the West today with so much manufacturing having moved to Japan, China and India. Process manufacturing is not covered as extensively as discrete and assembly operations, although items like light bulbs and other silcone and glass processes are now being looked at as discrete liquid flows, with hybrid techniques between process and discrete. There is not a lot of "10,000 foot" detail on strategies between put out, job shop, distributed vs. centralized, indoor vs. outdoor, etc. as in oil refineries vs. auto production, but that's because this is a DETAIL text on the math behind the trees more than the forest. With those caveats in place, you'll find this a treasured addition to your library beside the more general economic, process and strategic/ facility texts.

Manufacturing process book.

I think 45 chapters contain in this book are interesting from of mechanical engineering.point of view, by moment, my opinion only is referenting some of them.

Chapters on casting process, machining, and metal working are writing wiith great details, figures, charts, etc. are easy to understand for a reader with basic knowledge , no experience in a manufacturer field.

I like the modern approach of this book because include CNC machining,centers and I know this subject has a high impact today.

So I recommendate to buy and read this book for reader who interesting on the sujects abouth mechanical engineering.

Goes into a lot of detail, but a lot of the information is rather useless

Needed this for a Manufacturing Process & Materials class and really ended up not using it much. It contains a ton of information and goes into great detail for some of the most minor things, some of it great to know, a lot of it was rather useless. I found myself just skimming through chapters rather than reading them. Overall, if you need this book for a college class, see how the info in the book and the material your professor is teaching you line up. If the professor looks like he's skimming through the book himself for his class lecture, then you will probably not need this book at all and it'll save yourself a few hundred bucks.

Quite interesting is the chapter on the 2 different treatments used by the 2 main hospitals caring for victims (a treatment standard at that time, and 1 treatment experimental) and how the results of these treatments changed the standard of treatment for burn victims to essentially what we used today. Also covered is how studies on some of the surviving victims led to a better understanding of what we now call today PTSD. The book finishes with a detailed description of the trials, the legal precedents set by the trials, and the ending story lines of the people whose errors, negligence, and incompetence led to this tragedy. Also covered was the call for new laws to be passed to prevent future tragedies of this sort from happening--even though the book makes clear that this tragedy would not have occurred, if the existing laws at that time had been followed. As a post-script, the author includes a chapter on The Station nightclub fire, its similarities to the Cocoanut Grove fire, and lessons learned from The Station tragedy. Also included is a chapter on safety tips and what people should do to protect themselves from fire in public buildings. Overall, this book covers all aspects of the Cocoanut Grove fire, and should be interested to anyone who wants to learn about fires in public buildings, Boston history, or government corruption.

A kid with a match

Today is the 70th anniversary of the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston Massachusetts that killed 490+ people. John Barylick's book, "Killer Show" about the 2003 fire at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island references the 1942 Cocoanut Grove fire to show how little we've learned about protecting nightclub patrons in the 61 years between the two tragedies. This book's author, John Esposito references the Station nightclub fire for similar reasons. Evidently states toughen up their building codes and enforce their fire safety inspections only after an incident with mass casualties.

Reading these two books made me wonder whether any enclosed public entertainment venue is truly safe. In the case of the Cocoanut Grove fire, the owner kept the fire exits locked to prevent deadbeats from escaping without paying their bills. He ignored building codes that would have prevented overcrowding, and he also made no effort to purchase non-flammable materials to decorate his nightclub. He had a list of 'friends' who could eat and drink at his club without payment, and this list included Boston politicians, police and fire officials, and newspapermen. What few safety rules existed were ignored with impunity, including those which would have forced him to bring the club's electrical wiring up to code.

When a young employee lit a match to check out a non-functioning light bulb on one of the club's artificial palm trees, it was inevitable that the whole club would go up like a torch. Patrons suffocated or were burned to death trying to break through locked exits. The revolving door at the entrance to the club was almost immediately jammed shut with bodies. The Boston fire department responded within minutes to the fire, but by the time they were able to break through the locked or jammed doors, almost half of the club's patrons were already dead.

The chapters in "Fire in the Grove" that recreate the actual fire make for stark reading. The chapters on 1940s Boston politics and the trial of Cocoanut Grove's owner seemed a bit repetitive after awhile. Men are venal and corrupt, the author states over and over again. The justice system was not really equipped to punish the people who made the fire inevitable. The surviving victims and the relatives of the dead each ultimately received about $150 in damages. Barney Welansky, the club's owner was the only one who went to jail, and he was released on humanitarian grounds after serving only three years and seven months.

Be sure to read the author's postscript on how you can survive in the event of a fire in a public assembly building.

interesting, quick read

This is an interesting look at the November 1942 fire at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston, which took the lives of nearly 500 people, which was nearly half of the people who were in the overcrowded nightclub. Esposito does a good job of putting the fire into the context of the times--there were a number of servicemen who were killed in those early days of World War 2. He also spends quite a bit of time looking at the post-fire criminal charges against the owner and others.

I wish Esposito had done more with the fire itself though I imagine that he was limited mostly to newspaper accounts of the survivors.

I found his postscript about the 2003 Station nightclub fire very interesting, as well. For an excellent book on that fire, I would recommend Killer Show: The Station Nightclub Fire, America's Deadliest Rock Concert. Despite changes in the law, these kinds of fires still occur. Crowds still panic. Esposito describes a number of things people can watch out for when attending a large public event, such as a nightclub show.

Very interesting and a quick read. Recommended!!

Scripturally precise. Good for handing on. Easy to read. Hard to find. Recommend it for study.

Handy little book. Clear and precise. Explores the divinity of Christ and the and argues against the Trinitarian theory of the doctrine of the Godhead. Good scripture referencing to systematically walk through the argument. I find it good for evangelism. Hard to get wee booklet and I wish they would reprint it as it gives all the necessary scriptures to investigate the argument. Systematic, convincing and good quality printing.

More easy lessons from Mark

This one is more of a workbook of some of his favorite loony sketches. It is very short in length, about the size and length of a coloring book compared to the huge original Mark Kistler books, like "Draw Squad".

Mark shows you how to draw in in three dimensions so your art looks better. Space ships robots, and other inventions galore! His way of teaching is simply the easiest method a person can have to start drawing. Along the way you are learning perspective, shading, and other drawing tools without making these seem like tough concepts.

If you are looking for some fun stuff to draw, and the books you have seen before only seem to make it harder, your search is over. Mark's step by step method makes it easy for anyone at any age to get some basic drawing skills. You may want to try his big book "Draw Squad" before this one if you haven't yet... This one is for someone that has his other books already. And if his books are good, his old show on PBS and his videos are even better. He does not start by intimidating you with the completed project, in fact you don't always know what you are drawing until you are done. He takes you one line, circle, or square at a time and before you know it you have a fun completed drawing. I also reccommend you try the books from Ed Emberly, or check my lists on Amazon for kids that want to learn to draw, or be a cartoonist or animator.

Great if you are just starting to learn to draw or if you have drawing for a while

I grew up watching Commander Mark Kistler and his Draw Squad and he is one of the reasons why I became interested in art as a whole. Even if you didn't grow up watching his show as I and many others did you should really pick up one of his many how to books like this one. He shows step by step instructions on how to draw basic shapes, add shadow effects to objects/people/things and then combining everything into one work of art.

Pick this book up if you are aspiring to be a great artist or you just want to learn how to doodle around with some fun objects and creatures. Mark Kistler opens up your imagination and shows you how you can put it to paper.

I love drawing, something I've just started doing and I'm in my 50's. I've been using this and Kistler's Learn To Draw In 30 Days. I highly recommend both. I'm sure I will be purchasing more of his lessons because compared to others I have tried, his are so easy to follow and you are drawing awesome things right away.

on the darker side - well told and emotional.

Triangle wasn't what I expected. It was more a tangled and complex web of relationships that weave in and out and around, firstly three main characters who are eventually joined by a fourth.

James has a traumatic past and is secretly in love with his best friend but attracted to another. Casey is a surprise, his feelings taking an unexpected turn. Rizzo is a mystery, manipulative and initially hard to like. Nick faces his own demons.

I don't want to spoil the story by expanding on how the characters are involved with each other but suffice it to say, you will be kept guessing throughout the story as they alternate from wild attraction, deep love, potential hate.

This is quite an emotional journey, focused on the internal thoughts and feelings of the characters which are shared through alternating POVs. It has a darker feel and a slightly uncomfortable undercurrent due to the continued anguish felt by the characters, the playing off against one another and the troubled pasts.

A few quotes to give a sense of the style of the book...

"Friend. Right. I'm inwardly screaming: For god's sake, turn your head, look at me! I'm right here, right beside you. Mere inches away. I'm someone, too. I see you. I don't want to be your friend. I want to be everything to you."

"Because when Casey looks at me like that, like I'm his every fantasy come true, I know I don't deserve to be held up so high. I don't get how I can be so incredibly happy, and at the same time...almost sad."

I found myself quite drawn in, despite the sense of melancholy and was intrigued to find out how the story ended. The main downside was the sex. The build up regarding the sexual attraction was pretty intense and the characters come together in a way that is passionate and hot and hard and I wanted to get the full experience so felt slight let down as the scenes faded....maybe all the detailed action wasn't required for the story but I felt a little like I'd been left hanging.

All in all, a well told emotional story.

Reading the description I was reminded of the voice-over for a serial in the 70's where each person seemed to be in a relationship, or dreaming of one, with at least two other people...the sound-bite was “Confused? You will be..” and I wondered if that's how I’d find this. In actuality though its not as confusing as the description suggests as Nick doesn't come into the book until around halfway through, and we concentrate on just James, Casey and Danny.

I liked the characters, intense, solitary James, who seems at odds with the rest of the world apart from long-time straight friend Casey. Casey's one of the good guys, friendly with everyone, affable and easy going and though he's straight. James believes he's in love with him, though dare not show his feeling to Casey in case it spoils their relationship. Then along comes Rizzo – Danny- who turns everything upside down. He's one of those who always is at the heart of controversy, who throws out comments and actions for effect. He pushes and riles James, Casey tells James he's in love with Danny, and poor, poor James is so heartbroken and jealous but stuck. He warns Danny to leave Casey alone but then Danny makes sexual approaches to him too, and he's then totally confused about how he feels for Danny, and what about his long-standing love for Casey...Its all very intense, and these three dance around their feelings. At times its a wonder they ever managed to get any college work done! Then slowly out come some of the skeletons from each of their backgrounds, and along comes Nick into the mix. He's another troubled character in love with Danny... There are so many hidden secrets coming out and some tragic consequences to actions.
Its a very intense, insular book, and though in a way its all about how each feels for the other(s) its also lacking on romance for me. Its all about thoughts and histories rather than what's actually happening in the present, and I felt quite detached from the characters at times. That's me though – I like dialogue based books best, ones where I can feel as if I’m in the persons head, and here I felt like an onlooker and didn't quite follow what was happening much of the while. I needed to get more invested in outcomes than I did, and that's why for me this is an OK book, but not one I’d re read. It does have lots of sweetness, lots of that young, intense love, but there was too much introspection and not enough action for me. Still, everyone wants different things and I’m sure this will feel just perfect for others. It was originally a serial and maybe the transition to novel affected the overall feel?

emotionally intense

This book has something I'm usually not very fond of: love triangles.

The thing is: It works for me here. Even though I want to shake the characters sometimes I can relate to them. I kept reading to know what happens to them and with them.
