One of the best books I have read on Chinese Characters and how they came to mean the things they do. It is a companion to the Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1 and Part 2 textbooks as it covers the 670 characters occurring in them. It can also be read alone.
I wish they released a book that covers the origins of the rest of the 2000 odd commonly used Chinese characters.

Brose, in his introduction, states that _A History of the Great War_ "targets upper-class undergraduates, graduate students and professors," seeking to "break the mold of the 'facts only, please' textbooks" and is therefore interpretive in scope. This does not preclude it from general audiences, and in fact I believe, recommends itself to a broader readership than merely academic circles. In examining the Great War, Brose combines both military history with its necessary poliitcal context, but also looks at the conflict as a global war - what many historians writing about the First World War ironically do not. (Tuchman's The Guns of August: The Pulitzer Prize-Winning Classic About the Outbreak of World War I, Keegan's The First World War and Ferguson's The Pity Of War: Explaining World War I - while all very good - tend to focus primarily on the war in Europe, especially the western front) What really separates Brose, however, is his interpretation of the war.

From the perspective of military history, Brose tackles some long-held (some may even say "cannonical") views of Schllieffen, Haig's strategy at Passchendaele, the battle of Jutland, and America's entry into the war "saving" the Allies (in this case, Brose specifically calls out Mosier The Myth of the Great War: A New Military History of World War I). Similarly, Brose reminds readers of how the war's prosecution led to a revolution in military affairs (RMA): in large scale amphibious operations, naval technology (switching from coal to oil, for example), in uniforms, creeping artillery barrages, predicted artillery fire, and defense in depth.

In terms of politics, Brose similary illuminates how the war effected the political fortunes of both generals and heads of state, and in turn, how these men shaped the presecution of the war both strategically and tactically. What I found most impressive however, was the golbal perspective he provides. To be sure the offensives in both France and Russia made up the majority of his history - but the impact of Japan's entry into the war (and their political objectives in doing so), the internal struggles the Ottoman's faced, the precarious position of Persia, and the objectives and importance of Africa were each given close attention. This level of detail highlights the global impact the war had on world civilization, and makes apparent how how much it was a truly *world* war.

As if the scope were not enough to warrant five stars, the maps provided are both abundant and excellent. My only complaint here is that the tactical maps are all placed together towards the front of the book, forcing the reader to "flip back" to read them. And while most of the maps are from the USMA showing troop disposition and movement, an idea of topography would have also been helpful. But I nit-pick here. Another feature to strongly recommend this book is Brose's excellent commentary in his endnotes: he reasoning behind his interpretation and his reasoning behind his points of disagreement with other historians is outstanding scholarship and are fantastic examples of how history is a living thing.

For anyone interested in a detailed, thoughtful and accessable history of World War One, this is my first recommendation.

A Great Service to students of the Great War

Prof. Brose's text is the best book I've read on The Great War. But it may not be what everyone wants to read. In about 400 pages Prof. Brose manages to tell the major details of military history for the war and to do justice to economic and social issues while also providing an overview of the years 1919 to 1926: including the Russian Civil War, the problems in Palestine, British colonies in Africa and Asia, the politics of the peace process that culminated in the Versailles Treaty.

Most of the histories of the Great War are either more narrow military histories that leave out (or minimize) larger social/political issues or they focus on political deal making and manipulation. Prof. Brose sets out to tell a global tale (the war in sub-Saharan Africa gets several pages, Japan's war is examined, the Middle East, and what becomes Iran and Iraq are included). He also includes information about the active peace movements in Europe, the end of various Empires, and some first hand accounts of the horrors of war. This means that anyone wanting a detailed military history might be disappointed. However, as a single text that has plenty of militaria for most readers and lays out much of social/political/economic context of the war that is missing from most similar histories, Prof. Brose has done the student of the Great War a great service.

Bob de Wit is director of the Strategy Academy, an international research and educational institution focusing on strategy, leadership and business innovation issues (www.strategy-academy.org). He is also managing director of Strategy Works, an international strategy consulting and coaching firm that facilitates boardroom decision-making and guides companies through processes of strategic renewal (www.strategy-works.com).

Bob has a BA in Psychology from the University of Utrecht, an MBA from the Delft University of Technology and a Ph.D. in management from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. From 1985 to 1996 he was a professor of strategic management at the Rotterdam School of Management. Since 1996 he has held a chair in Strategy at the Maastricht School of Management, where he also served as the Associate Dean for research from 1997 and 2001. Bob is an active member of the Strategic Management Society, where he serves as chairman of the Interest Group `The Practice of Strategy¿, as member of the annual conference paper review committee, and as a member of the McKinsey Best Paper Prize committee.

Prof. Ron Meyer is Professor of Corporate Strategy at TiasNimbas Business School, Tilburg University. Ron studied Political Science at the University of Alberta in his native Canada. After receiving his bachelor's degree he moved to the Netherlands and got his MBA and PhD at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. From 1987 to 1998 he was a professor of strategic management at the Rotterdam School of Management / Erasmus Graduate School of Management. During this period he taught strategy in 15 countries, at universities and in companies, and acted as consultant to a wide variety of firms. For two years he was also Associate Director of RSM, in charge of managing the MBA Program. Since 1998, at the Center for Strategy & Leadership and its predecessors, Ron has combined boardroom consultancy work with in-company trainings and applied management research. As consultant he works with many top international companies on such topics as corporate strategy, business innovation, strategic alliances and strategies for growth. As trainer he has given seminars and training courses to hundreds of companies around the world and lectured at more than 30 universities. He has (co-)authored numerous articles and books, among which the internationally leading textbook on strategic management, Strategy - Process, Content, Context: An International Perspective. Over 250.000 copies have been sold so far and the book is used at more than 200 business schools around the world. In 2005 the 2nd edition was published of Strategy Synthesis: Resolving Strategy Paradoxes to Create Competitive Advantage, while his latest book, Mapping the Mind of the Strategist, was published in 2007.

Looking for one strategy book only, please stop here

For my MBA study I bought four good-rated strategy books from Amazon. Luckily that book was suggested as the main text book by our course professor . As you can see, it has a limited number of reviews in Amazon, which left me really wondering. I believe this is one of the top best business strategy and business thinking books ever written. Amazingly, it suite a wide variety of audience from naive student just looking for high-level strategy understanding to really deep thinker who may question even fundamental concepts. It offers a very solid structural approach in dealing with complex subject matter of strategy. Right from beginning, the book encourage you to think and question while reading in a very smart and attractive way. It set your mindset from early chapters to realize that there is no common agreement on even the definition of strategic management and there is big question by managers about its real practical value. But do not worry, it is NOT a dry theory book, it is a real live one and offers tons and tons of structured information and perspectives. This great book is guided by looking into strategy from three parent perspective of Strategy as a Process ( the HOW), Strategy Context (WHERE: environment and circumstances) and Strategy Contents (What: the product of strategy process).
This book can safely stamped with "money-back guarantee, if not satisfied"

A very good book!

I was recommended this book from a friend at the i-club. I love to drive and am looking to modify my car for better handling. This book is an excellent source for that! A major part of the fun in driving is a good handling car. This book covers all the basics in detail. It is easy to read, yet, has a Physics/Engineer depth to it as well. It is not just a matter of buying better suspension parts and installing them, this book goes into depth about understanding the nature of a good handling car and exactly what that entails from good tires, alignment, lowering the ride height, springs, anti-roll bars, shocks, brakes, etc. It emphasizes balance and that there is no magical part for better handling, but all the parts must work together in harmony and how making one change effects others parts in the car. Once you gain an understanding for the reasons of poor and good handling, you will then be able to truly understand what will work and what will not to achieve your goals. Changing one part of the design often has far reaching effects and it is rare that one part will do you any good. Just as I thought adding a stiffer anti-roll bar to the rear of my car alone would work! Tires are the source of contact and are vital to good handling, so an entire chapter is dedicated to tires and exactly what they do. This information is relevant to the everyday driver with no mechanical knowledge (like me) who simply wants to increase the fun factor in the driving experience, and also to rear gear heads with chapters on chassis modifications and designing your own parts as well! An excellent source for anyone who values good handling characteristics in their car as I do.

I really enjoyed this book. It is too basic for the level of understanding that I have now but still had some surprises for me. I wish I had had this book way back when, It would have helped me understand things a lot easier when suspensions were new to me. I think its a good deal for the practical minded modifier.
