Satisfied my curiosity but did not knock my socks off.

I was maybe expecting to much Wow from an author that shared the same nationality. I'm a Swedish american that was served a lifetime of meals prepared by a exceptional Swedish mother that was raised on a farm. His barbecue recipes just seem plain with no kick up or flare. Actually it lacks character. I like my barbecue cookbook from the Georgia Restaurant that states that it contains secrets that old men take with them to their graves. I also like my Smoking in the Boys Room Cookbook. I do a lot of home cooking and very seldom a repeated recipe so I'm more trusting of a female perspective. I love her Juke sauce and her Carolina and sweet barbecue combination sauce was a guest hit. Her grape salad is to die for. Jonas only contains rubs and barbecue sauce recipes. No marinade or brines. I just returned to using sour dough cultures so his sourdough recipes came at a good time but it is just Cowboy sourdough baked in the sun to activate. I even add Red Boat fish sauce to my injections and brines. Its like the Swedes adding Anchovies to chuck roast recipes in
place of salt. The printing was like the recipes. The recipes were grouped and spaced in typical format of single spacing as if it were a homework essay. In the beginning of the book you see a picture of a mature lady opening the lid on a barbecue that reflects both elegance and ruggedness. I'm drawn to the picture in interest but she's never introduced to the reader. I now know I prefer someone that is a successful honest sharing restaurant owner to author the barbecue book I desire.

Just a few months out of student life on the rolling green lawns of Haverford College, Philip Fretz was living in a small, remote West African city amid insect invasions, deadly snakes and coups. It was the tumultuous 1960s, in both the United States and Africa, and he had become an early recruit to the Peace Corps, founded in 1961. He was the first volunteer to be sent to teach English at the Kenema Technical Institute in Sierra Leone, a former British colony that had been left in stark poverty and underdevelopment when colonialism ended. Half a century later, he began to pore through the diaries he had kept, sporadically, during those two years in Kenema. When his father died in 1998, relatives found in his papers all the letters Philip had written home to his parents, recording his illnesses, his extraordinary adventures across West Africa, and the pain he felt watching his students struggle amid poverty and tribalism, in bare-bones classrooms without books and supplies, while keeping alive their hopes that they could have a brighter future.

Fascinating

In this well-written memoir, Fretz provides a fascinating account of his service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone in the late 1960s. During a tumultuous time that saw anti-war protests and race riots at home, and multiple coups in Sierra Leone within the course of his two years there, Fretz was able to make a small contribution, as an English teacher and ad hoc softball coach at the Technical Institute (trade school) in Kenema.. As his journal and his letters home demonstrate, he was a keen observer, and his accounts of traveling for hours by lorry on unpaved roads, or finding a deadly green mamba snake underneath the table at his house, or participating in a dance festival underline the reality of his situation: he, as were most Peace Corps volunteers, was sent to a small, underdeveloped town with little training and few resources at his disposal. It's a testament to his own strength of spirit that even as he became aware of the Peace Corps' idealistic facade, he was able to connect so well with his students and show that he really cared about their wellbeing. Highly recommended!

This book brought back memories of my 2 Peace Corps years in Sierra Leone in the 1960's. It was light pleasant reading. I would recommend it to anyone who has lived in Sierra Leone for any length of time. I was told to keep a daily diary while there and now regret not doing so.

Stuart Gregson has been working in the field of antenna design and antenna measurement for the space and aerospace industries for nearly 20 years and is currently with Nearfield Systems Inc.

John McCormick is Lead Antenna Engineer in the Sensor Systems Division of Selex Galileo and has extensive experience in Antenna/RCS research and development.

Clive Parini is Professor of Antenna Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London and has published over 300 papers.

Misleading Title

For what it is, the book is detailed and well written. I find the title a little misleading though. The book actually focuses on far-field antenna measurements at distances where receiving antennas don't yet appear as single points, but where distances to different parts of the receiving antenna still matter.

About the Author
John Kirk began his research into ocean optics in the early 1970s in the Division of Plant Industry of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Canberra, Australia, where he was a Chief Research Scientist, and continued it from 1997 in Kirk Marine Optics. He was awarded the Australian Society for Limnology Medal (1981), and besides the two successful previous editions of this book, has also co-authored The Plastids: Their Chemistry, Structure, Growth and Inheritance (Elsevier, 1978), which became the standard text in its field. Beyond his own scientific research interests, he has always been interested in the broader implications of science for human existence, and has published a book on this and other issues, Science and Certainty (CSIRO Publishing, 2007).
