Fascinating Integration of Geological Knowledge

This remarkable and fascinating book integrates knowledges from geology, chemistry, biology, and astronomy make a comprehensive history of our planet. Although the book is only around 300 pages, the pages are large with two columns of text so the book is actually much longer and more detailed than it may appear. This is a book for people who really want to understand the science of geology, rather than just read a popular presentation. The sheer breadth of knowledge included in it is amazing.

The book begins with the formation of Earth by accretion and hypothesizes briefly concerning the mysterious Hadean eon, then delves into the Archaen eon, including the formation of the moon, the formation of early continents, the chemical processes of bacteria, and the great oxygen catastrophe. Alongside the history of the Proterozoic eon is an excellent theoretical discussion of plate tectonics and the development of different kinds of mountains and other geological features. In general this book contains a lot of theoretical material that is very helpful in understanding the historical material. About half the book is devoted to the Phanerozoic eon even though this eon lasts only roughly 1/10 the history of the Earth. This is due to the Phanerozoic being better understood than previous eons and more also relevant to us--the development of modern animal and plant life took place during this time, after all!

The history of life on Earth is presented from a geological perspective. This is necessary of course because in 1993, reconstructing history by DNA analysis was very primitive. I would have liked to have seen more on the history of life, but that is just my particular prejudice. The reader would benefit from supplementing this book with some modern sources, but all in all it is a great science book.

This book was published in 1993 so unfortunately it is a bit dated. It fails to include the "snowball Earth" hypothesis, now considered to be so important for the development of modern life! The giant impact hypothesis was not the dominant explanation for the K-T extinction event it is today, so it is not presented in much detail here. This is probably the most well-known event in the history of Earth for a reader today.

This is my favorite series!

I've loved every book in this series. This book is Ryan's story. I'm glad he got his own. I kind of liked him better than I did Adam so I was really excited. The star however is his 4 year old niece, Bridget. This story will make you laugh and you do not need to have read the previous books to start here. You will definitely understand the story line better if you've read the others but because Ryan is the main character, it's not necessary. Hope you enjoy!

If you rip, sew, string and pull hearts together wishes and love with flow. Secret North by G.J Walker-Smith bounds the second chance at love and happiness together. Bente leads a whizz, bang and pop of power of enchanting the No. 1 Bachelor of New York city, restaurant extraordinaire Ryan D�carie.

Ryan captures hearts, like cupid shoots an arrow through them. In the ever-brilliant fourth book in the series, Ryan and Bente are reacquainted in a striking tale of fairies, magic and love found again. I loved how G.J brought such magic to the characters. The tales of her work bring heart and life to pages of work that could be seen as letter to word on a page. Bente and Ryan’s relationship is one of heart and proficient broadening within Secret North.

The shed of tears, the earnest of love and the soul searching proof that if you believe, magic can change and lure you into so much more than written language strikes to why I loved Secret North. Adam, Charli and Bridget D�carie are seen within the novel creating an all-round home run of emotions spiraling and appeasing after finishing reading Secret North.

The power to effect a reader, is one that G.J has ample efficiency in providing. I loved Ryan and Bente’s Secret North as it was milled to show character. The narrative displayed how a man and women can love each other through all faults, up and downs and leave with pure magic. I rated Secret North a 5- Lit Love because unlike other books, I took my time reading Secret North. Why? Reason being is because the profound notion of a true tale of love and magic asked me to pay attention. As a kid we believe in magic, as an adult the lines blur and reading Secret North, helped me find magic again. As a reader, we fall in love with characters and narrative, I fell straight back into the magic of the D�carie’s and La La Land. Loving it to pieces, I would definitely recommend reading.

Perfectly done!

I read this book overnight because I just couldn't put it down! GJ Walker is a master storyteller & I had forgotten the magic she weaves throughout her tales. I really enjoyed the first three books in the Wishes series & I felt this fourth book just took it up a notch. We get to see Charli & Adam through Ryan & Bente's eyes and all of them are a bit more grown up, with baby Bridget now a precocious 4 year old. I won't spoil the story, but it just felt like a seamless continuation from the earlier books, which I really enjoyed. There is also a teaser at the end from the next book which I am dying to read! There really wasn't anything I disliked. Even though I hadn't reread the earlier novels before picking up this one, I was instantly transported back to NY and the fast paced lives of the D�carie's. The characters all behaved in ways I totally believed, nothing seemed forced or contrived as in other books I have recently struggled through. No, this was a breath of fresh air & I thoroughly recommend it to all who will listen :)

About the Author
Bob was born and raised in Rockland County. After raising three daughters and a career in education he decided to change the tempo of life and began a new occupation as a full-time writer of automotive history. This was simply an extension of what he had been doing since his preadolescent years when he and his brother would collect sales brochures from any auto dealer who wouldn't show them the exit. Ever since he was in elementary school Bob was fascinated by the hopped-up Fords and Chevys (and even an occasional Plymouth) of the late '30's and '40's that the older "cool" boys drove to school. Recollections of those cars from long ago instantly came to mind when he first saw the PT Cruiser in 2000. Having previously written numerous articles and several books on Chrysler vehicles, his interest in the PT as the subject of a forthcoming volume was instantaneous.

�� Nature—tenderly intricate, ruthlessly impervious—is a constant and ambiguous presence in these poems, along with the social observation one would expect in a novelist.� No occasion is too modest or too daily to excite metaphysical wonder, or to provoke a lyrical ingenuity of language.� Yet even the wittiest of the poems are rooted to the ground of experience and fact.� “Seven Odes to Seven Natural Processes” attempt to explicate the physical world with a directness seldom attempted in poetry.� Several longer poems—“Leaving Church Early,” “Midpoint”—use autobiography to proclaim the basic strangeness of existence.

This collection gathers more than 300 of Updike's poems, some written in his youth and others very recently. Admirers of his fiction know that verbal precision, edged with wit, is one of Updike's hallmarks, and readers will fall upon his light verse with delighted recognition of its sheer cleverness. As a versifier, Updike knows full well how to use tools for the purposes of play, but he doesn't (usually) overindulge; even in the case of "occasional" poems, he polishes and polishes a passing subject with a certain modesty, until it shimmers: "White Dwarf," written to mark the discovery of "the smallest known star," salutes "A little pill in endless night, / An antidote to cosmic fright." The trouble, though, begins with his sober poetry. For some reason, when he works in this vein, Updike's ear tends to falter, his judgment often errs and the poetry wanders into dangerously trivial territory. This is puzzling, since Updike's sense of rhythm in prose is exceptional, and his perceptions are bound so intimately with those rhythms. Not so here, unfortunately.

If this collection is any indication, Updike is as prolific a poet as he is a novelist and critic. Nothing--airplane travel, a bug in the sink, a darning egg, a pair of eyeglasses--is too mundane a subject for the many sonnets, odes, and other traditional verse forms that seem to flow effortlessly from his pen. Many of the poems read like limbering-up exercises for the intricately wrought prose of his novels. The greatest weakness here (as in the fiction) is the preciosity and coyness of style, which, thankfully, is relieved by an unerring eye and self-deprecating wit: a pillow is "a bowl of dreams," light switches are "nipples on the walls' flat chests," and July evokes "deep pools of shade beneath dense maples/ the dapples as delicious as lemon drops--/ textures of childhood, and its many flavors!" Perhaps a slender selected poems would have better shown off Updike's gift for light verse than this exhaustive, bricklike volume. Recommended for comprehensive collections of American literature or poetry.

So Very Enjoyable

Whether light verse or more serious, John Updike's poetry is so engaging and accessible. His legacy is rooted in his short stories and the "Rabbit" quartet of novels, but Updike's poetry deserves and repays reading. This is the definitive collection, reasonably priced, attractively arranged. Do give it a try.

Upright Updike

A poem is a poem is a poem, right? Wrong. At least to me poetry is something that comes from within, something that's born perfect, something that doesn't need the craftsman. I know I'll draw a lot of criticism from the school of thought that swears by crafted poetry, but no, that's not my cuppa.
John Updike has always passed this touchstone test of mine, more so in this collection. True, not all pieces in this volume are spontaneous, but thanks to his respect for poetry, he has segregated his poems from his "light verse." In his own words, "In making this collection, I wanted to distinguish my poems from my light verse. My principle of segregation has been that a poem derives from the real (the given, the substantial) world and light verse from the man-made world of information - books, newspapers, words, signs. If a set of lines brought back something to me something I actually saw or felt, it was not light verse. If it took its spark from language and stylized signifiers, it was."
The fact that Updike understands the thick line between poetry and prose in verse, doesn't make his poems and verses any less interesting. In fact, it adds to their character.

John Updike has accomplished a great deal in his career, but his poetry cuts to the heart of his obessions/teachings/observations on life. What a wonderful collection to behold. He makes one appreciate how poetry can once again speak to the heart as well as the mind. I highly recommend this excellent collection for poetry lovers and non-poetry lovers alike.
