Wonderful Read and Tool

As a graduate student in a predominately psychodynamic program, I have been assigned a myriad of psychodynamic/analytic literature, and this book, by far, is the most incisive, jargon free, and useful tool I have found for understanding dynamic theory-all its important nuances- and perhaps, even more importantly, for applying it to patients. Gabbard also elucidates many ancillary topics, such as fee setting and phone calls, which the reader quickly learns are not so ancillary, but an integral part of the therapeutic technique and process. It is also highly refreshing and empowering to know that this masterful and erudite work on PSYCHOTHERAPY, and its implied necessity, was done by a biologically trained PSYCHIATRIST. Wow, sheer joy!

Well-written, concise and crystal clear

This is a an expensive, but really great book on long-term psychodynamic therapy which is often used to treat borderline personality disorders and other conditions that are more serious than the everyday problems of the average person.

It is actually a short book only being 210 pages. However, it covers a lot of ground and does it in a way that is easy to read. It introduces key concepts right at the beginning then it goes into assessment, indications and formulation. The next two chapters cover the nuts and bolts of psychotherapy and the role of the therapist. As a whole, the text does a great job of covering the end-to-end therapeutic process.

There are a lot of books on this topic, but this one is very clear, well-organized and covers the most important topics in just enough detail. There is not much fluff in this book and the clinical examples are useful and not overdone.

Great introductory book!

This is a great book for both graduate students and seasoned clinicians wishing to incorporate psychodynamic principles into their work. While many books about psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy require a sound grasp of jargon, Dr. Gabbard has done a great job presenting the material in a very palatable fashion. I would agree with one reviewer who stated that the reference section alone is the worth the price of the book. As someone who did not receive indepth training in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapy (I had been trained in CBT and systemic therapies), I found this to be a good launching point for further reading into psychodynamically oriented therapies(e.g. Mitchell & Greenberg; Fromm, Sullivan, etc.). If you are someone who has already received graduate level training in basic counseling/therapy skills, you might find yourself skipping over bits and pieces of the book. However, with that said, I would suggest this book to any counselor/therapist looking to incorporate psychodynamic thought into their work!

Say "Yes" instead to your kids.

I did receive a free sample of the product in exchange for my post.

When I saw the title Never Say No: Raising Big Picture Kids, I thought, “Oh, great. A book about child-centered parenting, where the kids run the home.” But then I saw it was written by Mark and Jan Foreman, who are parents of Jon and Tim Foreman, of the Christian band Switchfoot. I don’t know if you know who they are, but they are the band behind the songs “This is Your Life,” “This is Home,” “Only Hope,” “Dare You to Move,” “Meant to Live” and more. They’ve been one of my favorite groups for a few years. That had me interested, so I signed up for this blog tour.

I have to say first of all that this isn’t a “fast food” type of book. It’s more like a full 6 course meal! There’s a lot of information to digest, so you shouldn’t try to get through it in one quick sitting.

You can really tell that they both love the Lord so much and they both love their boys fiercely. They don’t claim to be perfect parents. Many mistakes were made in their parenting adventure. But the mistakes they made, as well as the successes they had, can help all other parents with their own child-raising.

There’s something neat about reading words from the parents of favorites. I have always admired Switchfoot’s use of weaving the relevant, the deep and the “cool” all at once. I see now where the guys get it from. :) The book is really well written. I like how they indclude stories of their boys’ childhood, and stories of their own lives, in each chapter. The book’s like a mix of a parenting help book, a memoir and a devotional. There were so many parts that I had to highlight because they were so good, that I was unable to choose just a few for this review.

I would suggest that every parent go out and get this book, or download an e-version. There is so much wisdom and love within the pages. I was truly blessed by reading it, and I know my children will be equally blessed because of the change in me. It’s one to buy for someone as a baby shower gift. The new parents probably won’t realize the relevance at first, but once you read through it, it’s pretty obvious that the wise advice is good from birth and beyond.

I want to buy this for everyone who is around my child. Amazing book.

When I read a good book, I find myself with my pencil, underlining here and there the little things that stick out, or that I want to remember. I have worn out my pencil on this book. I think I might have underlined more than I didn't. I have stars marking specific sections, I have notes to myself in it. And I have plans to re-read this amazing book as soon as I can with my husband and go through it slowly and digest it even more, and work through each of the questions at the end of each chapter.

In case you couldn't tell. I was blown-away by this book. It is amazing. As a new parent I am eager to learn from those who have gone before me. And this was probably the best parenting book I have ever read. This is a book I want to hand out to all of those who are closest to me as I raise my child. I want them to have the beliefs in this book.

Mark and Jan are richly in love with Christ and their children. This is not about letting your child have everything they want--but about saying yes to being there with your children. To never saying no to the call of your child to come and be with you. You need to read this book. Seriously. I can't do it justice in this review but it is worth the time to read through it and go through the questions at the end of the chapter. You won't regret the time spent reading this book.

Mark and Jan are honest and candid in their mistakes and growth as parents. They are not perfect but they have such an amazing friendship with their children and have given their children such freedom to become who God has designed them to be that it inspires me as a parent. I think it will inspire you as well.

I highly, highly recommend this book.

The Imaginative & Inspiring Parenting World of YES

There are several Christian parenting books out there but very few that take us through the imaginative and inspiring parenting world of YES. Mark and Jan Foreman’s new book “Never Say No: Raising Big Picture Kids” is by far one of the best parenting books I have read in years!

Many words have been used to describe the book including: holistic, road map, inspiring, wise, authentic and game changing. I agree wholeheartedly. The central theme of the book is the premise that “God is one big YES for us, and we want to pay it forward to our own kids.”

Teachers will LOVE it!

I can't believe this book has gotten so many low ratings. It is clear, provides good examples, and has excellent diagrams that explain the few paragraphs before it.

I have been teaching ten years and am currently in graduate school for higher education administration. I enjoy the book. If you are not a teacher, however, I can see why it might be difficult to see the reason for it if you have nothing to relate it to from your work life experiences.

Only suggestions: peruse the chapters first for the diagrams rather than highlighting and breaking it down yourself first--will save you lots of time. Also, the concepts are usually clear enough that you can skip many of the example paragraphs they throw in each section.

This text was pretty exhaustive but they should have included several examples of evaluations, executive reports, etc. It would have been interesting to study the types of evaluations and read some mock or real evaluation reports or mock journal entries listing information gathering processes, focus group meetings, etc. in each style.
They used a few limited journal entry examples but something that really lays out the whole process would have been better. The book is quite technical, perhaps at the expense of overlooking the energy and passion that evaluators need for themselves and to bring out in their stakeholders. Our professor actually had to use an additional book (Action Research by Stringer) to add that component. At the price we paid this text should have also covered more of that perspective. This book is ridiculously expensive. Surely they could lower the prices a bit and still make a great profit. I think that students being hit with huge tuition costs are getting tired of these outrageous book prices. The authors really know their stuff and I learned a lot from the book.
I don't begrudge them for making a profit for such a scholarly work but I'd love to know how they (the publishers)can justify such a cost for a book.
All in all a good text especially covering the component parts of evaluations, types of evaluations, evolution of the science, and the ethical issues that evaluators face.

One of the Worst Text books ever

Redundant text with a worthless index section that doesn't contain many of the major concepts discussed in chapters. The questions barely match the reading. Certain questions require you to dig through the material to find the answer; the problem being that there is only one sentence about the topic in the entire book. If it is important enough to have a question about it then why is there not more information about it? If you over looked it or just didn't pay attention to it, then you won't be able to find the answers without reading through the chapter a second time. (Don't bother with the index, we already established that it is worthless)

The authors substitute several different terms for the same meaning without indicating that they are doing so. This leaves you searching for question answers or assuming that one term means the same thing as another term. It is a very boring and difficult to read text book. You need to highlight and underline in this book because otherwise you would never be able to find important information again.

It also heavily focuses on education programs, which is unfortunate if you are trying to learn about evaluating programs in general.

That being said, some of the charts are very helpful. Had they made a practical field guide using these charts and text explaining them, then it would have been a great text book. However, the rest of the text gets in the way.

Collection of fun and simple projects for Arduino

What a fun book! I really enjoyed this book. I've only built two of the nine projects so far but both worked great and they were very straightforward. Ideally I'd give the book 4.5 stars because I do think the projects could use a little more "why" and I'm guessing folks not experienced at building projects like these might struggle with the assembly on a couple of the projects but both of these are very minor issues, hence deciding to go with five stars instead of four. All in all a great collection of fun projects that, more importantly, leave you with a great cookbook of code and examples that can easily be expanded on with personal experimentation. Highly recommended if you are looking for fun projects to build with Arduino.

Starred Review. This documentary graphic novel brings together starkly beautiful black and white photographs taken by Lefèvre, intimate drawings by Guibert, skillful design by Lemercier and a vibrant translation and thorough introduction by Siegel. In 1986, photographer Lefèvre was hired by Médecins sans Frontières (MSF; Doctors Without Borders), to document a mission into northern Afghanistan. Along the way, he and the doctors, guides and interpreters with whom he traveled endured physical hardship and the fracas of war. In one memorable scene, the group must cross an open plateau where Russian planes fired on the previous MSF caravan. Photographs acting as panels emphasize the vast openness of the plateau, while drawings allow a glimpse of the small human gestures of the travelers. Arriving on the other side of the plateau, they reach a wooded area where, two years ago, they buried the man who didn't make it. This revelation is punctuated by a large photograph of the burial mound under the trees, the mix of drawings and photographs heightening the emotional impact. Originally published in three volumes in France, the book has sold more than 250,000 copies there, and the reach of this magnificent work promises to extend far beyond the graphic novel community. Starred Review. Grade 10 Up—Lefèvre was a photographer who attached himself to a 1986 Doctors Without Borders (MSF) expedition into Afghanistan during its war with the USSR. Almost 20 years later, he worked with artist Guibert to create this stunning narrative of that trip. Lefèvre shot well over 100 rolls of film in Pakistan and Afghanistan as he crossed the border in a donkey convoy, watched the medical staff diagnose and treat young and old wounded in the war or sickened by disease, and headed back into Pakistan escorted only by a variety of guides, not all of whom had his interests uppermost in their minds. Guibert worked with Lefèvre to create the story that links these photographic images, most of which are black and white, with panels beautifully colored by Lemercier. The latter describe relationships among the travelers and with the local people, Lefèvre's political awakening, and assorted physical and emotional hazards, especially on his return trip without an MSF escort. This tour de force is essential reading for students interested in international relations, journalism, memoir, and the practice of medicine in Third World circumstances. Visceral and revealing: photographs enhance the graphic medium

In Collateral Damage, Marianne Hirsch states that during the war in the Middle East, "a picture is worth a thousand words...before the power of visual images, the subject has an uncontrollable emotional response" (Hirsch 1209). During the current Iraq war, she argues, these thousand words have been systematically censored, informing the reader that "as soon as Americans were being wounded and killed in significant numbers...the dissemination of images was strictly controlled" (1210). In The Photographer, Didier Lefevre represents Afghanistan in the 1980s free from the controlling tethers of U.S. censorship as he attempts to take photographs constantly, honing his talent while he argues "`improving your pictures necessarily implies improving your relations with people"' (61). Thus, while Hirsch contends that "in the current media age our students (never mind our public officials) have lost their verbal literacy and have given themselves over to an overwhelmingly dominant, uncontrollable visuality that impairs thought" (1210), Lefevre takes pains to conjoin verbal and visual literacy to develop more meaningful relationships with the people he meets. He takes pictures, surely, but also thumbs through translation texts to adequately communicate and empathize with the Afghani people, especially later in the book when he is left without an interpreter (176). He must relate to his foreign audience by conforming to their expectations, stating that he is a Christian (171) though he makes a misstep in stating he does not have children (172). By using language in conjunction with his photography, Lefevre transcends his role as observer--his camera does not censor so much as it amplifies his experience of contact and integration into another culture. Although Hirsch tells us that "Like Beckett's characters we [humans] are...unable to articulate, in clear terms, the relation between images and words" (1212), Lefevre performs this task exceedingly well, including his photographs liberally throughout his work, yet splicing them together with graphic representations of the world around him. The photographic representation of the people Lefevre meets humanizes them, though the comic injections remind the reader that they are perusing a subjective account, as Hirsch states that "Comics highlight both the individual frames and the space between them, calling attention to the compulsion to transcend the frame in an act of seeing...thus [revealing] the limited, obstructed vision that characterizes a historical moment ruled by trauma and censorship" (1213). Due to the included photographs, however, censorship breaks down in The Photographer. If, as Hirsch contends, "Vision is faulty mediated, unreliable, blocked" (1213), Didier Lefevre is attempting to remove that blockage through reproducing his vision in pure black and white, revealing landscapes (195), private prayer (200), and painful surgery (130-131) administered by the brave members of Doctors Without Borders. Lefevre's pictures allow for a removal of borders between reader and subject, aligned with Hirsch's statement that "The wounding effect of images blurs...boundaries...uniting rather than dividing victims, perpetrators, and bystanders in their embodied subjectivity" (1212). The perpetrating Russians are hardly seen in The Photographer, allowing the focal point to remain on the Afghani citizens and those stalwart doctors who yearn to assist them.

A wonderful read for anyone interested about Doctors without borders

While told from photographer's point of view, but the story is told through a comic style images interspersed with actual black and white images (with one color image) taken through out the journey. Every page just pushing you to continue on, read it twice just to be sure I didn't miss anything the first time around and enjoyed reading it still.

The Photographer: Into War-Torn Afghanistan with Doctors Without Borders by Didier Lefèvre (the photojournalist), Emmanuel Guibert (the graphic artist) and Frederic Lémércier, translated from the French. A creative solution to a problem: what do you do with reels of stunning photos from the Russian-Afghan war after the talented photographer has died? Answer: use his proof sheets and journal notes and supplement them with graphic panels. This combination memoir of a naïve young man's first trip to the battlefield and his excellent and candid photos of DWB in action are augmented by "comic-strip" panels to fill in the blanks in the adventure. It works extremely well. It is, moreover, a good story that also deepens our understanding of Afghanistan while highlighting the modus operandi of dedicated NGO medical personnel in a war zone. Didier is young and innocent, and, thus, brave. He sets out to return from the field alone. He is kidnapped, robbed, close to death, in desperate straits before a local chieftain saves him. A dramatic story, well told. And, now that bloggers are running around the world reporting on trouble spots, this should be required preparatory reading so they don't blunder across boundaries and become the news themselves.

Very validating for those who understand the power of personal connection

The folks at Phired Up are inspiring because they believe in the power of quality personal connection. In a world where connection is often boiled down to a poke or a comment on a status update, this book talks about the fading skills of connecting to the individuals right in front of you. If you recognize connection to others as your path to success, then this is your playbook. The book is a dense one, and set up in sort of a workbook fashion. It's not the sort of book you quickly read and absorb immediately. It's something you go back to, practice and suggest to others. I could see a group of student leaders using the book together over the course of a year, trying the exercises, doing the reflections, and discussing the ideas.

3.5 stars for a fantastic book with a terrible ending

Perhaps my biggest pet peeve as a reader is when I invest myself emotionally and in a book - when I give it all of my time and attention - only to experience the main character betray herself at the end. It feels disingenuous, like I've taken part in a lie.

Such is my problem with this book.

The first three quarters - the first four fifths, for goodness sake - is fantastic. Bronte comes to London for a hen night, meets the gorgeous and alluring Alex, and they rock the headboard. She goes back home to Australia, he heads back to his life, and all's right. Each has recently broken up with a significant other, they provide succor and sex to one another, and they have given themselves some hot memories.

A year and a half later, Bronte is in London for a new job. Joining her, equally new to the company, is Alex. Neither can forget the passion and chemistry they shared, but now there is a teensy little problem: Alex is engaged to the girl from whom he was broken up when he and Bronte got together the first time.

The thing is, their attraction to each other is just as strong as it was when they met in the bar. Their attempts to fight it off only seem to strengthen it. Sure, Alex has a fiance�, and Bronte soon has a boyfriend of sorts in Lachie, a fellow Aussie who has come to England as a sort of budding wedding singer. Lachie is every bit as hot as Alex is, and he cares deeply for Bronte. But her heart belongs to Alex.

The thirteen weddings are those at which Bronte works as a photographer. If you're interested in the nuances of wedding photography, this is the book for you. Each of those weddings - Each.One . - is detailed and discussed, sometimes to the detriment of the story's pacing. You'll be on a roll with Bronte and Alex, and then you're at a wedding.

Bronte, Alex, and Lachie are an entertaining threesome. Bronte has a sweetness to her, but also a sharp edge. A childhood experience scarred and scared her away from religion and marriage, but she is willing to open her heart to Alex and Lachie. It's in there - her hope in love and fidelity - but she has to trust herself before she's willing to tear down the obstacles she faces.

Alex is presented as an honorable guy. He's engaged to a woman he's been with for ages, and he feels tremendous loyalty to her. Yet she has become an obligation and not a life partner, even if Alex clings to closely to duty to see it. Lachie, on the other hand, is a traveling troubadour of sorts. He's fun, and he's interested, and he's the salve to Bronte's torn heart and ego.

Does she use him? I think she does. She's given her heart to someone else, and as much as Lachie gives to her, she takes, even when it appears she is giving in return.

The ending ... well, I won't say anything because you need to read the book. But the ending ANNOYED THE HELL OUT OF ME. It isn't that I expect hearts, roses, and happy Hollywood endings. But I do expect that the ending will remain true to the characters I've enjoyed. And this ending seemed to smack that loyalty and disregard it completely.

Thought it would be a sweet and fluffy romance, but got instead a very strong and bittersweet story. Truly amazing
By love and stolen kisses
The book begins with Bronte meeting Alex in a Club, each of them on hen/stag night. Both of them are newly single. They connect instantly, and ends up having a one night stand. One year forward they meet again. Even though it was only meant to be a one-night stand, Bronte never forgot Alex, and it doesn't seem that Alex forgot about Bronte neither, but this time he's about to get married to the girlfriend he was on a break from, when he met Bronte. Working together with Alex every single day is difficult for Bronte.
The whole situation with Alex is one big mess, and even though it's a big part of her life, I loved that the story is not centered about them getting together or not, because there is something there is much more present in her life, which is figuring out how to deal with something that happened in the past. She can't move forward alone or with anyone before she has accepted/forgiven her past.

I really like Bronte. She's a woman that's not scared of following her ambitions. She's very straight forward, and not a shy person..... but there is also this secret side to her. She's very affected by something that happened in her past, and it make her sound very cynical about love at times. She's not a big fan of weddings. Doesn't believe in marriage or god - imagine being a wedding photographer then?
It brought something to her character everytime she witnessed a wedding through her lens, and she grows through the book.

I've read all of Paige's books, and is a big fan of hers, so obviously you might not take my words for something, but I truly think this is the best she has ever written.
I did the mistake of thinking this would be a sweet and fluffy romance with weddings, but what I got instead was a very strong, and bittersweet story.

There were times were I thought, wow this is much darker than what she use to write, but somehow the tone in the book is still kept very light. Bronte's friends brought a lot of light to the novel. Lachie especially, who is a fellow aussie and wedding singer. He's a warm person, and to quote Paige "This boy has more confidence than Johnny frigging Jefferson." LOL. He's really great. The ladies thinks so too ;)

I love the way Paige write. She has this talent for setting a mood, and place with very few words. Making her heroines warm, funny and strong women. I love that these women are someone you can look up to.

There were many great surprices in this book, and I can't really tell you more without giving anything away.
But know this, this story brought just as many laugh as it did tears.

A great book - no, that doesn't even cover it - An amazing book.

BRILLIANT!!!

Yay! I was screaming and dancing around when this book arrived one day before pub date. As soon as I finished the book I was reading I started with this one. Paige Toon is one of my favourite authors and I just love her writing, so I was really curious about it.

The story follows Bronte, if you already read Pictures of Lily by Paige Toon you might recognize her. It all starts at a hen night where Bronte meets gorgeous Alex and they share a night of passion, then she leaves for Australia again, where she lives.
One and a half years later she’s back in the UK, working there for a year. It turns out that Alex works at the same place and they meet again, their chemistry and connection is sparkling again, but Alex is engaged now.
That makes everything really weird and uncomfortable for both of them. Bronte is really confused.

Through a friend Bronte gets the possibility to be a photographer at weddings and she really likes it. At a wedding she meets Lachie, an Australian musician, and they become great friends, she is also very attracted to him, but there is still Alex.

Bronte has a great group of friends and I loved reading about Bridget again (remember her from The Longest Holiday?!). They meet regularly at the pub and have lots of fun. Sometimes they also accompany Bronte to weddings.
Alex is really weird sometimes; asking Bronte weird stuff and their night comes up several times. At a wedding of two of their friends they get closer and share a passionate kiss. That makes Alex ignore her for several weeks, but Bronte knows that she is in love with him. It only get weirder when she meets his fianc�.

There is Lachie as well and he’s flirting with her all the time. She likes him a lot, which only makes her feelings more confusing. She is torn between two man, not able to be with one and not wanting to hurt the other one. I really felt with her and just wanted her to find her true love. From time to time she suffered from bad dreams, connected to her childhood, we only find out towards the end, what it was all about. Lachie was there for her all the time and so caring. I really wasn’t sure whether to be on team Alex or Team Lachie, I liked them both, both definitely have book boyfriend potential. Eventually Lachie and Bronte get closer.
Wedding #13 is Alex’s wedding and Bronte has to be there and take pictures, is that really a good idea? Everything gets really interesting from this point forward, with a lot of drama, I couldn’t put the book down!!!

As a reader you really don’t know, who she’s going to pick in the end or whether Alex marries his fianc�. At a moment a got really angry with Alex, because he didn’t seem to realise the truth, only when it was too late. I have to say I was probably more on Team Alex. Bronte made her own choice and I really loved the ending. We also get to hear about older Paige Toon characters again. Not only in the end, but also in between. So Joe Strike and Lily fans, keep your eyes open. I was so happy with the news and it put a real big smile on my face.

The book also covers the topic of friendship and being there for friends and the topic of alcoholism. Covering difficult topics and still find a heart warming and cute style to write is just BRILLIANT!!! Bronte’s past is also present all the time and I loved the way Paige put this all into one story. Her writing is so gripping, dramatic, romantic, sweet, compelling…

The Thirteen Weddings were great to read about and all so different. Bronte is a warm and passionate character and her feelings really came through during the whole story.

This book actually calls for more of Bronte!! I say that after all the Paige Toon books, because she creates wonderful characters and still wanna be part of their story. It’s great that the books are all somehow connected. I also think that it’s time for Bridget to have her own story!!!

AMAZING!!! I was able to dive into the story and be a part of it. ♥♥♥
