Bilal's Bread, by Nick Wilgus

Bilal Abu has a lot to say, but he's scared to say it. And who could blame him? In the wake of 9/11, this 16-year-old Iraqi refugee has to contend with his immigrant family's never-ending drama and his fanatical older brother's sexual abuse. When Bilal falls in love with the son of the community's religious leader, things get better - and a whole lot worse. In this careful study of what it means to be a stranger - in a new nation, in your own religious community, and even in your own family - Nick Wilgus gives us a courageous character who manages to find his voice just when other people most want him to be silent. Nominated in 2005 for a Lambda Award for Best Gay Men's Debut Fiction.

the Abu family was a hated minority in Iran
By K. D. Elston
Bilal's Bread is, at times, a very challenging - - but quite rewarding - - book to read. It is the story of a young Kurdish Iranian boy whose mother, two older brothers and sister are forced to immigrate to the United States after Bilal's father is murdered by the Iranian police for his polital activism. This is a "fish out of water" story on so many levels: As Kurds, the Abu family was a hated minority in Iran, and misunderstood in their new mid-American community. As Sunni Muslims, they were harassed and discriminated against by Shiia Muslims in Iran, and lumped together with all Muslims as "terrorists" in the post-9/11 era in their new home. As Bilal's sexual identity is beginning to develop, he is caught between powerful cultural differences which threaten to tear him apart. His oldest brother, Salim, is deeply conflicted by what he believes to be traditional Muslim teachings against homosexuality, including a command to kill those who have engaged in homosexual acts as well as those who have been the passive recipients of those acts. And yet, his own feelings and attractions disturb him greatly. Salim, as the nominal head of the family, after his father's death, tries to rigidly enforce the religious beliefs and traditions of his former Kurdish Muslim community in Iran, but is losing ground with his siblings as they begin to assimilate to American culture, which Salim views as evil. The clashes, especially those between Bilal and Salim, make for some excruciating reading. But there is a realism in author Nick Wilgus' writing that makes the drama and pathos undeniably compelling. If you want a light read, this is not the book for you. But if a complex story and characters, and strong, empathetic writing appeal to you, you will not go wrong with Bilal's Bread.

Brilliant !
By Sue Roediger
This story is a perfectly wonderful presentation of the angst of a young man coming to terms with the truth of his sexuality. He happens to be Muslim, but the emotions would be the same for any youth in a very conservative religious community. Bilal's story will break your heart. You may find yourself wanting to reach out, to protect him.
I worked as a social worker, this book needs to get into the hands of gay or lesbian youth. Oh, yes there is sex... never mind that...this book is bound to be a wonderful find for young folks who are feeling alone. Or for adults who are looking to understand.

Just wonderful!
By Robert Berryman
Best novel I've read in years! I have never read a book that captures the experience of growing up gay in a hostile environment as well as this one does; nothing else has ever come close. I wish something like this had been available to me when I was a kid. This novel is superb!
