A Project Book Outlining Plans for 20-30 Small Backyard or Homestead Projects

This is a project book, covering something like 20-30 individual projects that you might use on a small urban farm or even a somewhat larger (5-10 acre) homestead. I've uploaded some pictures to give you a sense of the project pages and how they work: the materials you'll need are listed, as well as diagrams and instructions.

This is a helpful book that you can go to for ideas as much as actual directions. I say this because the spirit of the book seems to me to be all about doing it yourself, not necessarily following a paint-by-numbers set of instructions. So a birdhouse plan might give you some ideas for your own birdhouse, as might the plans for the simple sawhorses.

A note on the plans: if you have a saw, hammer, and some nails, you can pretty much complete all of these projects. No need for a router or biscuit joiner here. These are simple projects demanding simple tools and some limited know-how.

I like this book and find myself returning to it often. It's simple and inviting.

Truly a Do-it-yourself guide

I am not a carpenter or wood worker, but am attempting and slowly learning to be a homesteader. I was super excited to get this book and dig into it, and was so pleased to find projects I KNOW I will be able to complete myself! This is a book with many different projects that will serve both homesteaders and do-it-yourselfers alike. The photography along with the project directions will make these projects a true pleasure to dig into!

A great guide to self-sufficiency

Before buying this great book, I found the publisher's YouTube video on how to make the Leopold Bench - which is just one of the many projects shared by author Spike Carlson. It was nice to see the video because it gave me a good sense of what his teaching style is like. With some carpentry experience under my belt, this is a book I feel confident diving into. My wife and I are planning to build a small house someday soon (for which we bought Your Cabin in the Woods), but until then, we are taking baby-steps with projects that we can take with us. I'm excited to make the root cellar storage system for storing this summer's produce.

I've read different versions of Holy War and liked this one because it's in plain English. I easily understood it and it stayed true to the original. A Mess

This book is very poorly written. Somewhere below the run-on sentences and indecision about use of italics or boldface, there just might be some valuable information but you'll have to dig to find it. I suspect this book has been revised too many times and old information is getting mixed in with the new. I am disappointed that my teacher chose this book because I had been looking forward to the course. Now I'm just plodding through it with my eye on the finish line.

Transforming self image through Motivation to Happiness/Success

Takumi Yamazaki is a best selling author in his home country, Japan. Reading and absorbing SHIFT: 13 EXERCISES TO MAKE YOU WHO YOU WANT TO BE suggests that very soon he will be a best selling author in the United States as well. His style of writing is spare, delicate, warm, and supportive. And unlike many other motivational writers he is grounded in creating solid psychological information about human behavior and turns that information into a mirror that allows the reader to read, observe, reflect and change - with complete ease.

Yamazaki opens with a Prologue that defines self image - how we arrive at the way we perceive the world and our position in it. He then dives in an explores how self image is created, referencing the the conscious, the subconscious, and the unconscious. Then he guides us through the paths of 'shifting' our self image by explaining homeostasis (status quo) and scotoma (blind spots) as the markers that we have the ability to alter in deciding to become who we would like to be. The message is of course more complex than a sentence summary, but the reason Yamazaki succeeds is that he emphasizes how to understand our motivations and how to use those in a restructured way to convince ourselves that change is possible through our own work, our own decisions, our own facilities. 'You can create a new reality for yourself from this very moment. You can reset your life and move it in the direction you want....life is not the continuation of the past, it is the connection to the future. You can choose to change the direction it's going.'

He discusses our needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization and suggests the following equation: 'scale of your desire + the desire itself = willpower.' To achieve this he recommends 'having a meeting with yourself every day' - a time to rewrite dreams and motivations and discover possibilities/probabilities. 'What you think happens. You make your own reality. When you think good thoughts, good things happen. When you write things down on paper they are more likely to happen.' Beyond these bits of simple sage advice the author provides examples of 'shifts' and exercises to perform alone or with friends. The motivation we each need to effect change can sometimes be difficult to find. In this self-help book, Takumi Yamazaki provides thirteen exercises and seventeen techniques aimed at enabling you to obtain, retain or maintain the motivation you need in order to change (shift) your self-image so that you can become the person you want to be.
So, how does Takumi Yamazaki address the issue of motivation, and what insights does he offer? He begins by discussing perception and the roles of the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious in the way in which we see the world. Takumi Yamazaki discusses the status quo (homeostasis) and blind spots (scotoma) and how to recognise and overcome the limitations that both can impose on your desire (and capacity) to change.

`Live as though you already have what you want. Until it happens, just live as though it already has.'

Having identified barriers to successful change, Takumi Yamazaki provides thirteen exercises (some of which you need two or more people for), and seventeen techniques for increasing your perseverance.

The book is easy to read, and contains some good information and useful techniques for effecting change. Not all suggestions will appeal to for everyone, but I think that the real key is to consider the suggestions made and explore the possibilities that appeal at a personal level.

`All the answers are within you.'

For me, the best part of the book is within the seventeen techniques included to assist with perseverance. Many of these techniques could assist those who are seeking to increase their self-confidence. It isn't possible for an individual to completely follow each of the exercises in the book: some of the exercises require two or more people. This may be a drawback for some readers who prefer to work alone.

I read the book in one long sitting, did the 13 exercises, and was motivated to get up, make a phone call, and start a project I had been thinking about, but wavering on.

Mailer's Rushed Murder Mystery

In his take on writing "The Spooky Art", Norman Mailer admitted that "Tough Guys Don't Dance" was written in a blur to get out of a contract. The book reads like it and Mailer reuses a number of lines he used before (such as Nelson Rockefeller having a mouth within a mouth which Mailer also used in his account of the 1968 GOP national convention). Mailer offers a murder mystery that includes his thoughts on the CIA, spirits and spooks, drugs, marriage, rich kids, boxing, relationships between fathers and sons, God's role in football games, writing, John Updike's descriptions of female bodies and a host of other subjects. An absurd number of bodies pile up. This book should have been a disaster but it is breezy, often funny and there are some strange, often memorable, characters. Is it a great book? No and it certainly is not one of Mailer's better books though it is one of his funniest. In his defense, Mailer was more than aware of this and he was not trying to write a great novel. But it is a fun romp through Cape Cod and the mind of Norman Mailer.

Excellent!

An excellent collection of first-rate horror short stories. Matheson is a master of concise, nasty little tales; "little" being the operative word here; nearly all of the tales are no more than a few pages long. But boy, do they pack a punch! I owned a copy of this book some years back, but something bad happened to it, and I haven't been able to replace it since. A real shame, too, because this is one that can be read over and over with no diminished enjoyment. Would-be writers of short fiction can learn a lot from these works. R.C. Matheson is the son of Richard Matheson, another amazing writer of horror, sci fi , and fantasy, probably most known for his writing for "Twilight Zone", "Duel", and "Prey", which became the most memorable segment in "Trilogy of Terror", where the fiendish Zuni fetish doll comes to life and terrorizes poor Karen Black. If you can find this title, it's definitely worth checking out. Why does all the good stuff always go out of print?!?

A Must Read

I'm giving this one 5 stars because, despite its flaws, the stories that are superb more than make up for the others than are not as strong. It's obvious that Dennis Etchison has had a powerful full effect on RCM, but his voice is still his own. The lesser stories feel a little gimmicky, the style sometimes stifling, but then in the strong(er) stories the same technique, because it becomes invisible, works quite will. All of them rely on some kind of last-line shocker, their hyper minimalist construction always dangerously balanced on a single word, with knifepoint accuracy when they function well, but artificial, stilted, etc., when they don't. Still, I consider this one of my personal faves. 5 stars. Read it. Sorry for my lack of copy editing. I'm on an ipad.

I wish I would have had this book when I was going to school. This book not only defines virtually every medical term but elaborates on essential areas. The beginning of the book is a color atlas of all body systems. eg. Skeletal,GI, Cranial Nerves, Muscles ect. It is then organized as a Dictionary from A-Z. There are clear pictures to help elaborate on definitions and explanations. An example is in the area of Intercranial Pressure. Not only is it defined, it is also explained in detail including ICP monitoring devices and pictures for easy understanding. I have been a nurse for a long time and found this book to be a wonderful reference.... in all areas of nursing.... Everyone on the unit wants to borrow this book and many have already purchased it themselves.
